JD 2630 options

Hi, I recently purchased a 1975 JD 2630. I'm trying to figure out what options this unit has. I know it doesnt have the "hi-lo" because there is no shifter on the left side of the dash for it. Ive taken delivery of the TM manual and owners manual for this tractor and I'm trying to sort out a PTO problem. The owners manual talks about a continous running PTO and an independent PTO. I've got both the foot operated PTO engagemnet pedal AND a handle between the shifter that I believe operates the PTO hydraulically. The problem is that when the handle between the shifters is in the "disengaged" postion the PTO continues to turn. I dont believe full power is being transmitted to it but it doesnt stop like it should. I wedged a piece of wood against it and can slow it down. My thoughts are that the PTO brake is either worn out or out of adjustment.
I cant find any reference to a brake for the PTO on the continuous PTO in the tm book. How can I tell what options this tractor has? The serial number is:227643T
Other than going to the dealer can anyone decifer that serial number? Thanks Neal

here is a link to the tractordata page for your 2630, it shows its a 1975 model, not sure about the pto problem though

Hi, Thanks for the reply, Ive been to tractor data many times while i was looking. Its a good start but not much more than the basics. Thanks Neal

There is a chance that the PTO clutch pack is gaulded and letting it drag while disengauged, this would soon wear out the brake,,just a first thought..

If there is something missing that you need, don't hesitate to email and get it added. Or if you figure something out that will help the next guy with that model.

-Peter (@ Tractor Data )

I hope the price was right.
If somebody added oil to the transmission which wasn't wet clutch compatable. The wheel brake linings and proabbly the disks will also be ruined.

That tractor can have a live PTO powered by a two-stage clutch on the engine-flywheel - or - an independent PTO that is fully hydraulic. It's NOT going to have both.

These models Deere tractors with independedt PTO have a little internal PTO brake band and it can get torn off very easy. Running a bush-hog on the rear without an overrunning clutch adapter can tear off that PTO brake the first time you use the PTO on a mower like that. Mower keeps spinning with PTO turned off - and the little brake engages - and it snaps right off. We fixed hundreds and many customers just gave up on them.

I don't know, however, which PTO you have. If you have the live (not independent) with the two-stage foot clutch, the PTO disk in that clutch might just be dragging.

Neal in Pa,
From your description of a pto lever between gear shift levers your tractor is equipped with independent pto. It is activated by trans pump oil pressure. The lever on LH side by your heal is merely to dis-connect pto shaft. I never really understood why JD left it on ind pto tractors. I agree with Tim S that the pto clutches could be warped but the pto brake could be worn out or not getting enough pressure to apply correctly. Raising sheet metal cover over gear shifts and checking pto clutch & brakes pressure is the only way to know what's wrong.

Thanks for the reply Jim, Can the pto brake be viewed by simply by removing the sheetmetal cover? I was hoping to avoid splitting the tractor but was resigning myself to the job if necessary. The foot lever works the PTO clutch, correct? the PTO works normally if I use the foot pedal. It stops completely. Of course its not very easy to re-engage unless you shut off the tractor, but can be done. I'm hoping that I made a decent purchase... $4500 and the engine sounds really strong. Had pretty much everything done around 1000hrs ago. crank, liners, pistons, head redone ect. I'm looking to run a small square baler and a 9 ft mo-co. and I'm hoping this unit will do the job for me. I've been looking for quite a while. Thanks, Neal

Something doesn't jive here.
Quote"The foot lever works the PTO clutch" Unquote. We assume the foot lever is the clutch pedal located left and forward?
The pto uses either a two stage foot clutch pedal and a lever that swings on the left side of the transmission case.
Or the foot clutch has zero to do with the pto.And the pto is independently operated with hydraulic oil pressure from a handle between/infront of the two trans gear shifters.
On the independednt pto tractors. There are oil pressure test ports to diagnose if the oil pressure applied or not applied to the pto clutch. Approx 150psi is normal.

Quote" Of course its not very easy to re-engage unless you shut off the tractor, but can be done"

Are you grinding gears to engage the pto unless the engine is shut off?

It appears this tractor may use the two stage foot clutch to start/stop the pto and tractor travel. Odds are some tinkerer tried setting the clutch clearances via "by guess and by golley" instead of using tools and the manual.
How much clutch pedal free travel is there right now? It's possible that the adjustment is out and you can't push the clutch pedal low enough to disengage the pto clutch.
Have you opened the inspection cover on the left side and had a look at the clutch(s)?
I would have to worry if the previous tinkerer can't set up the two dry foot clutches? Can he "rebuild" a diesel engine?

HI buickandeere, I'm sorry, I mistakenly said foot pedal. I meant to say Rear PTO lever that is right beside the foot pedal for the differencial lock. I guess my confusion is it has both the lever on the side of the trans case for the PTO AND the lever between the gear shifts. This would indicate to me that it has the independent PTO. Does this mean that the foot clutch needs to be used when engaging and disengaging the lever on the side of the trans case by my left foot? Im sorry that I'm a green horn...This is my first large tractor and I'm trying to sort this out. I've purchased the owners manual and the technical manual and have the parts manual on the way. There just seems to be so many different configurations within the same tractor line. Looking at the diagrams in the TM can be confusing when I'm not exactly sure what options this tractor has yet. Thanks so much for your input. I know that the gentleman I purchased this tractor from doesnt have any of the manuals for this unit,so where he got his info from when he replaced the clutches and pto brake some years ago is unknown. I do know that everything he purchased was from the dealer close by. The engine was put together 10 yrs ago and has approx 1000 hrs since. It starts right up,even in sub freezing temps, with very little smoke and is very responsive with a good exhaust note. He had the tractor split to replace the clutch and pto brake at some point and from the questions I asked him I'm thinking that the PTO brake was never adjusted tight enough. He said that at approx. a year the pto shaft would continue to spin when the lever between the gear shifts was "disengaged" but that it could easily stopped by hand. When i looked at the tractor it was very cold out (below 25 deg) and that wasnt the case. We figured that because everthing was so cold that it wasnt easy to stop spinning. Maybe that was a bad thought on my part. But for what I have invested I think I will be OK even if I have to split the tractor to relpace the PTO brake and or clutch.

Does this gear shift lever exist to enage the rear pto? AT20093 LEVER

Does this gear shift lever exist to enage the mid pto if so equiped? AT29826 LEVER

The tractor has either the continuous driven pto which uses a 2nd dry clutch "inside" the main transmission clutch. Two stage clutch pedal, you can feel the resistance of the 1st and 2nd clutch.
Or an Indepedent Pto which uses a hydraulic valve to apply oil to the wet pto clutch pack buried deep inside the transmission. Has absolutely zero, nothing, nada with the foot clutch.
It doesn't have both types of pto unless it's some tinker built frankenstien mix of two different tractors bolted together.
You neevr answered if the pto shift "grinds"?

I'm suspecting more and more you are not a serious poster but some dum *ss bored kid doing m.u.d.

You are most likely going to have to split it at the shifter area, the PTO clutch is forward and the brake is rear of the split, they are fairly easey to split, the hard part happens at the parts counter...

buickanddeere,
In Neal's first post he stated" His tractor has a lever between the two gear shift levers". This indicates to me that his tractor has INDEPENDENT PTO,it has no two-stage clutch. And yes if while tractor is running one can disconnect(stop) pto by shifting lever by ones left heal rearward and doing the opposite the shifter collar will grind trying to re-engage. You not understanding his post doesn't make Neal a dumb axx kid in my humble opinion.

The guy was going around and around in generalities and vague answers. Instead of answering several specific questions. Which would have immediately narrowed down the problems and left no doubt.
It wouldn't be the first time some bored kid posted a similar question and lead people in circles until they caught on.

I still wonder if the tractor has independent pto when we read this quote” the PTO works normally if I use the foot pedal. It stops completely.” Unquote.
Some pictures would help too.

b&d,
You can correct me if I'm wrong. In Neal's first statement he states and I quote[the problem is when I shift the handle between the shifters to the "disengaged" position the pto continues to turn]. He mentions the foot control pto and a handle between the shifter!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe you should try reading his statements CLOSER rather than calling him a kid or that he's vague. If he posted a picture it will have a ind pto handle between shifters and a pto disconnect lever on LH of tranny. This is similar to all JD utility tractors built in the '60's,'70's &'80's in Iowa & Germany with ind pto.

HI, Thanks for the responses everyone. I took delivery of the parts manual today and it answered alot of questions concerning the different configurations of this tractor. I"m quite certain now that this tractor has the independent PTO with no mid-shaft and no Hi-Lo or reverser. The tractor is about 20 miles from my home right now and I went over yesterday and played with it for a few mins. I tried stop the shaft when the hydraulic lever was disengaged(the one between the gearshifters). I couldn"t tell if I was even able to slow the shaft down. So I"m thinking at the very minimun the PTO brake is either way out of adjustment or completely destroyed. Next I used the lever on the left side by my left heel to engage and disengage the PTO. Disengaged,it stopped like
it should, engaged it spins. When I tried to engage the PTO with the left lever the gears
didn"t clash like they did the day I bought it.
Does the clutch pedal need to be depressed to engage the left PTO lever?
Mr. Buickandeere,I"m sorry I seem to be annoying you. I"m simply trying to learn. I cant change your opinion of what you think about me, but I"ve been called much worse than a dumb*ss before. Thanks everyone, Neal

Neal,
If I remember correctly you are supposed to kill engine to engage the shifter on LH side by your left heel on a tractor such as yours that is equipped with independent pto. Glad you received your parts manual. You should also get the operators manual as it will also answer a lot of your questions.

No offense intended to you Neal as you seem to be more the "real deal" now.
For a while it seemed possible the 2630 post was from a bored kid trying to get us to chase out tails in a circle.
If the tractor really has an independent pto. Then any and all function(s) and operation of the pto/pto systems is independent of the foot clutch pedal.
There could well be confusion over the terms independed, less independent and continious.
Maybe a US marketing thing, to equip independent pto tractors with a mechanical shifter after the hydraulic clutch pack.
Haven't seen a mechanical disconnect on a live pto here since the two cylinders.

The cover needs to be popped of the clutch housing and checked for one or two dry clutches in there.
The oil pressure to and from the hydraulic lever between the shifters needs to be checked too. Just about anything could have happened or went back together mixed up while the tractor was split.

There are pto's identified as "Less independent and independednt" listed with and without a mechanical shifter.

Shifter equipped, both independent and less independent.........
