JD 3010 engine troubleshooting- help!

I'm writing on behalf of my Dad, so I may not have the details exactly right:
Mid-60s JD 3010. Gas engine, starts easy, runs good. After an hour or so, it sputters, then dies completely. It won't start again until it cools. All fuel lines are new and filters/bowls are clean. Ignition/plugs/wires are new and properly timed. Radiator is full and crankcase has plenty of oil. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Are you working it hard when it gets hot could vapor lock. The original fuel pump was diaphram type. The later pump was piston type.

When it dies, remove the fuel filler cap and see if you hear a sucking sound. Tank/cap may not be venting air into it as fuel is used. When vaccuum becomes too great, tractor stops.

Thanks for the quick reply! Yes, most of the time when we have these problems the tractor is pulling a two-bottom plow or a relatively large disc. Would switching the fuel pump to the later piston type eliminate the problem? I know this tractor does have the diaphram style.

You have the typical symptoms of a bad ignition coil that fails when it heats up.

Be ready with a spark tester the next time it stalls, and IMMEDIATELY check for spark. If there IS a good HOT spark, you have ruled out the ignition system, and can procede with checking out the fuel system. (The spark SHOULD jump a 3/16" to 1/4" gap in a spark tester.)

If NO spark, it's the coil or possibly the condensor or some other component or connection that is failing as it heats up.

That's as big a pile of BULL PUCKEY as has EVER been posted on this site!

They are ALL diaphragm pumps.

The later units are crimped together, (non-rebuildable) and look different but they ARE still diaphragm pumps!

Sounds like a condenser or coil.
Hook a timing light up, strap it on the hood where you can see it and go to work and when it starts to die see if your light is still flashing or does not flash. This will tell you if you have no spark when it dies.
