JD 3010 Gas Engine Noise

I am looking to purchase a JD 3010 Gas tractor that has a fairly loud rubbing/scrapping noise near the front of the engine. At first I thought it was a bad bearing on the alternator (the alternator belt had a sight wobble to it).
After further inspection I have concluded that the noise is coming from lower on the engine possibly near the front coupling.
Also when the engine is being shut down after it is swithced off but before it comes to a completer stop a ratcheting noise also comes from this general area.
Is this normal for a Gas 3010 or is it a sign of a major problem?
In addition the engine produces a fair amount of white smoke when it is being cranked over but goes away once the engine starts running. Is this normal? Thanks in advance.

Is it possible that you are experiencing some worn out parts in the coupler between the crankshaft pulley and the hydraulic pump? It seems to me we had similar noises some years back on our 3020 gas. As I recall it was a matter of replacing either the coupler halves and/or the rubber/plastic inserts that fit in between the coupler halves. Try disassembling these parts and start the tractor up and determine if the noise discontinued. If it does, then at least it you have narrowed things down a bit. One other possibility, which I am not sure about on a 3010 gas, and I would pose this question to someone who may have a better idea than I do, but if I am on the right track, could this tractor have crankshaft dampener pulley where the rubber innerts have deteriorated and the outer part of the pulley has separated from the inner part of the pulley?

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately since I do not own the tractor I am unable to diagnose per your suggestions. I am thinking that it may be a well worn engine balancer causing the noise. I think I will pass on this tractor.
