JD 3020 D trouble shoot

the tractor wont start with out a jump start and soon as i turn it off it wont restart the battery"s are one six months old the other a year and both are full on water and fully charged by a charger but still i have to jump start two 12 volt battery system it has the original generator i wonder if it could be the generator or what do you think it could be i have replaced the fuel tank temp gauge fuel gauge brand new tires and the clutch the brakes and the exhaust and fuel lines wiring harness and had the hydraulic hook up replaced so not looking to spend to much on it but sense i have spent so much on the other stuff i will fix the rest of it to the fullest sense i have a bout $4,000 in repairs not including labor which i got lucky on and traded out on so i need to know your opinion on the rest on the battery any advice will be appreciated thanks it was probably $6,000 tractor it was given to me in my grandpas wheel lol... so i have started restoring it and using it to brush hog and move round bales and plow and disk and seed but i need to get it ready to do hay so i need to fix the lights and hope to god that is it thanks

Start by checking the voltage across the two batteries while it is running 1/2 throttle.

Should be about 29 Volts, IF the generator is charging.

The generator and/or regulator could be bad. Or you could be expecting too much. The 24 volt new generation generator only puts on 10 amps. That should take several hours to recharge the batteries from a cold start. It won't reharge the batteries in a few minutes.

Have you checked and cleaned your battery cables, including the ground?

Maybe a dumb comment, but check your starter. I have a 4010 that had the same symptoms. I went thru everyhing and finally took a starter off of another tractor and it started. Sometimes your batteries need just a little boost to turn over a starter that is dragging abit.

One more question, have you just or have the tracotr painted since this started? Done that to my 3020D Powershift Wheatland. To good of paint fob where the batter box sets on the axiles and not passing the current back. My two cents!

I have a similar issue at the moment with my 4020 diesel. I charge my batteries and the charger says it is 100%. But when you use a battery tester, I can only get 3 balls out of four to float. And one cell would only float 2. It seems that a chrger will show 100% of charge on what is able to be charged. And not really 100% . I know my batteries are on the death bed. I have a 2 battery 12 volt set up and I have a simple charge pack that is portable to bump start the tractor. Really slick. I recommend them highly. Once running it will restart easy for the rest of the day.

You could have a badly corroded battery cable. Cables can corrode under the insulation where you can't see it. Look for telltale bulges in the cable insulation.

If that isn't the problem,pull the end cap off the starter. Then blow the starter out real good. Sometimes the armature wear will cause problems. You will see copper dust. Then inspect the area around the bushing in the end cap. If the thrust washer on the armature shaft is worn badly enough the armature will arc agains the end cap. If so, you will see where it has arced the end cap. If so you can sometimes reverse the thrust washer and remedy the problem, but I would replace it.Its a fairly rare occurence, but I have seen it happen.The dust or the arcing could be dragging enough extra current out of the batteries when starting so as to cause the problem.
