Is it possible to put the balance gears from a 140 14 hp into a 314 14 hp? They are not avalable from JD so I am going to have to find a doner moter if this will work. If this is poss. did any other JD garden tractors use the gear set that would work for a 314.

Why would you want to? I have read on multiple forums that you can't tell from the way the engine runs if those balance gears are in there or not, and if they are not in there, they cannot give trouble.

It makes a tremendous difference the 314 shakes like a paint shaker until it gets up to higer RPMs, I have owned a 140 that had very little shaking and now I have a 314 that just about shakes me off the seat!

Hello, You can go to any Kohler dealer and get the gears not just JD. I am sure all K321 engines have the balance gears. there is a difference in the gears, so make you get the right gears, and make sure you get them in time. The answer to your question is yes they will interchange. Mel

Hello, They will all interchange but there is a difference in the weight of the gears. Kohker has a service bulletin about the gears. Mel

Take your Kohler engines Model, Spec, and Serial Number to a Kohler Engine Dealer to order the correct parts for your engine. The gears are NOT cheap. If I remember right, the last set I bought were $75 each. You will also need the needle bearing/shim kit and IF YOU DO NOT HAVE IT, A Kohler K-series Service Manual. I need to get me a new Manual. It has seen TO MANY engine rebuild and is getting a little thread bare.

gears from a k241,k301,k321,k341 are all the same, buy new studs and gears with bearings and they interchange........when just replaceing the bearings in the gears, there were 2 different bearings, the difference being the o.d. of the bearing..honestly,,we just leave the bearings out during overhaul and cant notice a difference..the engines came both ways, with and without the balance bearings

I worked for Deere when the 314's were new and they were know for shaking at idle.

Deere sent a service bullitan to raise the idle speed of the unit. That was their cure for the problem.

I would not put the gears back in a motor if one of those gears let loose they can break the block i would check to see if your morot mounts are good an not shoot
