Probably. I bought a replacement engine for an AMT 600 a few years back from an outfit called "Small engine warehouse." They had a kit, with adapter plate to install a new engine. I have not done a web search to see if they are still around.

there is a vanguard engine kit available 20-23 hp put one in a couple years ago. lot more power, smoother running made the tractor what it should have been from deere. a complete drop in everything fit very well. does not even bog down running a snowblower or mower deck in very high grass

Had the same issue on our JD 400, ending up spending a ton of money on the old Kohler 20 horsepower; couldn't believe Kohler abandoned their customers that soon, and this was almost 15 years ago!

I read a while back about someone using a "Predator" 22 HP from Harbor Freight in a 400.

The are a "clone" of similar brand-name V-twin engines, even down to having an oil cooler. As is typical with HF stuff, some like 'em some hate 'em.

They can be had for $559.99 if you use a 20% off coupon.

I'm going to order one and give it a try in my 400 that has a Kohler with a broken rod.
