JD 4000 Hydraulic Problems

I have JD 4000 ~1969. It has a problem that if i push in the clutch i loose my power steering completely. It used to be if i held it in for a long time this happened, now more than a few seconds i loose my steering. The lift arms and hydraulic outlets work, i cant say if they are slow or not. Does anyone have any ideas on this?

In the previous models that usually came from a worn out check valve deep in the transmission that let the front oil cooler/reservoir drain back to the transmission when the transmission charge pump wasn't running. But that's not supposed to be the problem in the later tractors.

I have some service bulletins that say to look for leaks (internal too) from the pressure circuit and valves that are leaking pressure off. I don't have much on my web page about the later tractors such as yours. I do have some service bulletin numbers from the indices, but I've not seen those service bulletins. A Deere shop or parts counter should be able to print them off from their computer.

4020 hydraulic fix

The side console models have a group of check and relief valves on the left hand side of the transmission case below the battery box. Possibly one of them leaking.
By the way I fixed an early model 3020 using Gerald's information. Works great, thanks Gerald!

Looked in my parts books. The check valves are in the "Oil Filter Relief Valve Housing". Looks like there is an updated check valve that accomodates an O-ring. Looks like about $20 each check valve. (Probably just need one) There is a serial number break too, so have that handy. (Tag is located on the rear of the differential housing.) One thing confuses me abot your troubles, I would think you would lose your remotes and 3 point before steering.

Don't forget a "high pressure leak to sump" will deplete the oil reserve while the clutch is depressed, as well.

The pressure or priority valve under the dash cowl gives priority to the steering and brakes over the 3 point and remotes in a low pressure situation, doesn't it? I think you would lose the steering last, although maybe very soon after the remotes and 3 point, if the main pump is starved.

if all else fails ,check the suction tube from the trans. oilpump to the sump in the bottom of the trans. my 4000 had a cracked tube and would lose hyd. prime every timei held the clutch in for more than a few seconds. good luck.

I just wanted to give everyone an update on this problem. I decided to pull each of the valves from the oil filter relief valve housing and inspect them. The oil cooler reflief vavle was "frozen" in its bore. It took some effort to get it out, which involved tapping some threads and making a slide hammer. I was very rusty and not working. I cleaned everything up the best i could and put it back together. Upon starting it I imediately heard a different sound out of the front pump. It sounds like it used to, which i think is the sound when the pistons are held open. It is kind of like a cackle, which i have not heard in a couple of months. I then got on the tractor and held in the clutch. The problem i was having would give me less than 5 seconds of steering with the clutch in. I now can go literally over 3 minutes of contiuous turning with the clutch in. I am thinking it is fixed. I really cant get it out to work it for a couple more days but i am pretty confident. Thanks for all the insite on check valves and such, it really help pinpoint where to look for problems.
Best Regards
Matt
