Can somebody school me a bit on the JD 4020? Side console? Oval muffler? Intakes, etc.

I can tell you all about 2040's but need info on the 4020.

I am going to the auction this weekend where that one is for sale that I posted on Monday.

Hope to try her out and drive it home.

Side console and oval muffler started in 1969. Hydraulics on the left side of the dash and round muffler stopped at the end of 1968. The hydraulics and the remotes are entirely different with the side console tractor have the first with the rabbit/turtle speed adjust in a style that JD used for decades.

The first SN in 1964 was 65001. The first SN of 1969 was 201,000. There were several changes at SN 91,000, like oil bath to dry air cleaner. Wiring harnness with connectors, different ignition and starter switch. Enough to justify a new operator's manual. The changes at the beginning of 1969 justify a separate shop manual and parts book.

The late (side console) engine does not have the crankcase ventilation pump.

Pat,
The 69-72 have 12 volt systems with alternators instead of the 24 volt system. The 71 and 72 injector pumps are much larger. This is important as parts for the little CB pump are next to impossible to find and the change over is expensive.

Be sure to check the front end real good and check and see if it had a loader on it, loaders are real hard on em. Thats about the weakest part on my late model 4020.
