JD 425 No Fire

I have a 425 which exibits the standard 425 problem...runs a while, quits and after it cools, will start. Took advice given here and changed the time delay module. Worked fine a few hours, then began to backfire when shutting down and now will not start for anything. Changed the plugs, new battery..gots lots of juice with no place to go. Get a green light on the control fuse module but no red. Read concerns with plastic cam gears. How do you check for that and how would it present...? All help appreciated...where does donation go?

If your tractor is a early one they had a vacuum switch that took vac off the top of the carb and another line from the bottom of the carb and routed it to the switch which then routed it to the bottom of the air cleaner which I believe was used to stop all fuel flow in the carb when the key was shut off. The later builds used the electric solonoid in the bottom of the carb that blocks the main jet when the key if off. Both systems use the module that allows the engine to run for a few seconds? after the key is turned off. The problem I had was very similar to yours and even though the vac valve bench tested OK it would fail after about 15 min. running time. I finally disconneted the vac lines to the top and bottom of the carb and blocked off the ports on the carb and it has been running great for over a year now. If yours doesn't have the vacuum setup like mine then check for the fuel shut off solonoid on the bottom of the carb..Let us know what you find.....Fred

I'm not having a problem with not firing, but do have a question for 425 owners. The gearbox on the 60" deck on ours tore up at around 1800 hours, we had another put on and it went out in about 300 hours. Has anyone else had any problems with that gearbox? Does anyone know if cutting in high grass with that deck will cause this? A JD dealer said he would think the belt would slip or break before the gearbox went out. Any one have any comments or bits of wisdom?

We have experienced similar problems with our JD425. Have had it worked on several times. It used to get hot, that is fixed, now it will start and after about 5 minutes it starts cutting out bad and runs likes that for about 15 to 20 minutes, then it takes off and runs fine. Have had no luck in fixing this problem. It is a 20 horse power kawisaki. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks
