I'm looking to upgrade from my 8N. I'm looking at a JD 4300. I do mostly ag work. Plowing / disking, planting. Can anyone give me advise as to if the 4300 is a good ag tractor capable of pulling a two bottom plow? I don't know much about these compact tractors.

I hope you are not going to use a ford plow, because of interference with the plow frame and the tractor right lift arm. 2x14 will be a load, 2x12 would be better. No problem with ford disk, 3 section harrow, or 2 row planter. Russ

so for plowing 40 acres using a two bottom, this tractor may be a little small? seems to be what you may be getting to..

40 acres with that hydrostatic tractor? is it hydrostatic? man, you'll burn that thing up plowing in no time.

Why don't you consider a deere 1020 or 1530 or 2030 or 2040 tractors? They have all kinds of doodads, parts are easy to get, horsepower from about 38 to 42. The above selections will pull 2-14's or even 2-16's.

I have a B john deere and a trip 2x14 for that kind of work, and I guess bigger would be better, but I have plently of time. Russ

What experience do you have with 4000 series hydrostatic transmissions? Not much I'm assured.

They are fairly reliable. They certainly are not as efficient as a gear drive tractor, but are as handy as a pocket on a shirt. We pull the stew of of them with a single shank sub soiler. The front is ballasted with weight extension (over 1000#) and it will still spin all four tires. We run them at the test site 24 hours a day/5 days a week. ( a lot more than plowing 40 acres)

All that said... like you said a 1020 may be a great inexpensive replacement for the 8N. I would be more likley to go for the 1020 because of price and ability to service the tractor with normal garage tools.

several years ago i broke the crank & block on my 8n. as all i had left was junk i had nothing to loose, so i went to the junk yard & picked up a 289 ovh v8 got out the torch and got at it . after a couple of rebuilds it works great.it pulls a 2-14 in any gear. i had to use a 1/2 ton ford clutch to hold it. is a eye catcher at the local 4th of july parade.i have 10 deers at home but love those dual straight pipes.i am only 67 my wife thinks i ought to grow up,why?

Other lesser known but darned good Deere tractors made by Yanmar for what it sounds like you're wanting to do are the 1250, 1450 or 1650. If you're going to use a loader with it, look for one with MFWD.
