JD 455G track loader

It won't move. Bucket hydraulics are fine. Engine runs fine. Hydraulic oil reservoirs are full but, the tracks will not operate.

Any help is appreciated.

The 455G has been abandoned by the owner on my property. He cleared my 5 acres with it and it ran fine and operated well.

Initially, after several months of inactivity, I started it and it moved about 5 feet then quit moving. That was when I found the hydraulic oil low. Five gallons later, still no move. Can the hydraulics get air locked? The bucket works fine.

Also, at some point, if the machine operation is restored, I'll recondition it and use it on my property. At that time, I'll need to understand what is undercarriage percent wear, how to evaluate the condition of the tracks and sprockets and other stuff. The engine is nice and smooth and starts well. Likely needs an oil and filter change.

But, the current goal is to restore track operation.

do you have a hydrostat or direct drive transmission.

if its like a 550G its a direct drive that acts like a hydrostat. Has an 'inching' device in the left hand pedal that allows it to act like a hydrostat. Might have 3 pedals; left one 'inching' device, middle-is brake; right-de-accelerator.

Left to right pedals are small pedal...didn't know it was to inch, next two are steering pedals, right pedal returns engine to idle speed. The steer pedals are allegedly supposed to come to attention when hydraulic fluid is at pressure. Mine do not pump up. I suspect there is no hydraulic pressure due to air but, I am not familiar with those hydraulics.

So, how do we determine if there is hydraulic pressure. And if none, what could cause that? Could there be air in the system?

So many questions...you folks have the answers.

I'm not aware of a safety lever. The lever on the left is moved from the park position to either a forward or reverse position. The throttle is set to provide adequate power. The pedals are moved to steer right or left. This machine is fitted with Powershift.

No clutch pedal...steer pedals do the steering.

O K by what you said it sat then started and moved a little and stopped. You say it was low fluid. You starved the charging pump for oil and no pressure to the transmission. Find the fill port where you added oil. Wrap a rag around it and put air pressure in there for about two minutes as the machine runs in neutral then try putting it in gear.

safety lever allows the shift lever to move at all. If you can shift gears at all, the safety lever is off. Safety lever up means you can shift; safety lever down & loader will not move & you cannot shift gears.

There is one lever at the LH side which controls the tracks. When it is down, the tractor is in "park". When it is moved from park, one selects neutral or one of several forward or reverse ratios, gears or speeds. This shifting is done without a clutch, hence the term Powershift. Shifting is done under power using the decelerator pedal at the right while selecting the ratio. I have not used the inch pedal at the far left. Also, I have not had the opportunity to use the steer pedals. I think I have all that correct. Now, I've got to determine why no hydraulic pressure is getting to the motive system???

There is one bright red lamp on the instrument panel. It remains lit when the engine is running. Can someone identify the red warning lamp? What does it signify? How does it get extinguished?
