Jd #5 sickle mower

Im restoring a jd #5 sickle mower. I want
to paint it afterwards even though i know
that the paint will wear off eventually.
I have a manual coming in the mail soon.
Im guessing everything was painted green
on it? Any way to find out what year it
is?

JD #5 sickle mowers were built from '34-mid '50's. They had no serial tag that I'm aware of. Only method to determine date of manufacture is searching parts catalog for part # for year changes.https://partscatalog.deere.com/jdrc/navigation/equipment/80894

The tail wheel was yellow. I have seen all kinds of color schemes used on the cutter bar. I think James has a beautifully restored mower.

It's been a long time but I remember the one we had when I was a kid having yellow on the lettering on the gear box casting.

I dont know, just a guess here, but would the guards be yellow?
