JD 5010 vs. 5020

Does anyone know the basic differences between a JD 5010 and 5020 other than years produced? I'm looking for signs that would tell me one versus another. Thanks

"I'm looking for signs that would tell me one versus another."

The serial # should tell that story!

5010 came with 24 volt starter and charging system, 5020 came with 12 my book says. 5020 has more power from essentially the same engine.

Many a 5020 has been repowered with a bigger diesel, Kinze did all but one with a detroit diesel V engine.

Thanks, Gerald. Do you know why they were repowered? Was there an issue with the original power plant, or did most just want more out of a tractor that size? Thanks

While they were a big tractor on the market, the market was ready for bigger and Deere built the drive train tough enough to stand the larger engine. I don't know that the Deere 531 was all that great an engine either. My book says Kinze did 700 or 800 while there were a few thousand built.

Two cylinder magazine last year said there were 7553 5010 built and 12,909 5020. All diesel and all synchrorange. Apparently the injection pump was turned up for the 5020 was rated at more power than the 5010.

Head piston and injector design were the leading cause of the horsepower increase between the 5010 and 5020. 5020 was also avalable in a row crop version where the 5010's were all standards.

It was the same concept between the 4000 and the 4020...The 5010 was more of a poor mans version of the 5020 with less horsepower and not offering as many options as the 5020.

The 5010 was not stripped down 5020. The 5010 came 1st in the series. The early 5020 was improved then the side console 1969 and later 5020 was better yet. Then came the natural aspirated and turbo 6030.
As with all models of the 531 with the funky cam oil pump drive. They should be equipped with a Murphy switch, even the early 619's. The late 619's drove the oil pump direct from the timing gears.

there was NEVER a 5020 side console- the 6030 turbo came first and then for one year the 6030 NA was offered but with only 45 made and sold it was decided to delete the ONLY deere tractor ever offered with a choice of 2 motors. The 5020 row crop did not come until 66' as well before that the 5010 came equipped with a standard NON adjustable front end with either 24.5 single rears 24.5 singles with 18.4x34 duals OR 18.4x34 mains and duals. The 531 is a good motor-

5010's were also available with a differential lock the last year of production (1965). Bert is correct, the 5020's were never offered with a side console.

Old topic, but to truly answer the question, meaning differencing them for far away:

- 5010 has a small fuel cap, vs 5020 huge fuel cap
- Intake manifold on 5010 has 3 tubes going to the engines vs 6 on the 5020. I have seen 5010 with a 5020 engine swap or head swap, and that is an easy way to find out.
- The 5010 has a 10 series dash of course, green, with the box under the steering wheel for the operator manual and ether on the left side. 5020 has the 20 series dash with ether right under the steering wheel. Also guages are different. Gauges panel is plastic on 20 series and metal on 10 series, with gauges sticking thru.
- 5010 dust shields are not rounded and do not go all the way to the bottom of the battery box. The 5020 battery box has a hole at the bottom that is uncovered if the dust shield is not there, the 5010 box does not have it.

That's not true at all. A better comparison would be the 4010 and 4020. I think a couple of people in this thread should be asking Santa for subscriptions to Green Magazine.
The easiest way to tell from a distance is that the 5020 has the short horizontal louvers down the side of the radiator. The 5010 does not have them.

Well darn that is embarrassing. Deere kept the hydraulic controls up on the dash with all 5010,520 & 6030. The actual dash was used on other tractors as well.
