JD 520 Capability

Is a John Deere 520 capable of running a 7 foot haybine or a small square baler on fairly level ground? What is the 520 PTO rating? Are there any signifanct problems with a 520 and what is one worth with new rear tires?

I run a JD 1209 (9 foot haybine) and a JD 337 sqare baler with my JD 530 WF. Ther is plenty of power to run both, and the hydraulics do lift the haybine. If you"re not ina rush, the 520 will do just fine. Roughly 35 hp.

Yes, a 520 will do the job you are intending.
I have cut allot of hay with my 520 and a 477
New Holland Haybine. The 520 also handles our 68 New Holland baler with a thrower well. The 520 is a very nice size tractor to use with it's power steering, live pto and hydrolics. It is the equivilant to a late model A only with the nice features and options added. Putting a price on a 520 is hard from area to area but a ball park figure would be $4000 plus or minus depending on condition and if it is wide front and has 3 pt. Best of luck, I don't think you will regret owning a 520.

My 520 dynoed at 35 pto horsepower after an overhaul job. Hydraulics should be strong enough to lift it.

Prices vary, but most are around the $3500-$5000 range. The lower end would not have a 3pt hitch. You can expect to pay $1000 more for one with a 3pt versus not having one.

They are great little tractors. The only thing that goes wrong usually is the exhaust manifold leaks. Other than that, they are almost bullet proof.

Level ground, rolling or hills? Dry,damp or wet soil? Sand, clay or loam? Is the wagon pulled behind the baler? Do you build the loads 5 high with 25lb bales or 7 high with 60lb bales?
Are the baler knives sharp and adjusted?

We have a 520 and like everyone else said they are bullet proof. We have run a NH 479 haybine and a 336 baler pulling 20 long bale wagons with 200 bales on them. We run a lot of hills you just need to use your head and you will be fine. Ours has a lot of hours on it. It still has the factory head gasket and has never been touched. It needs it bad but still runs and would go to the field and do a full days work.

Dad bought a good used 530 in about 1963 that was used for everything we did. 227 corn picker, 494 planter, etc. In recent years I have used it a lot on an Oliver 60T baler. It has plenty of power to bale in the hills with, enough weight to be safe in the hills (especially if I add 3 or 4 rear wheel weights), but it isn't as hard on pto equipment as my 720 is and its a little more agile in tight places. Keep the pto clutch and pto clutch brake adjusted and always use an over-running clutch. The clutch brake will only stop a baler or bushhog once if it doesn't have on over-running clutch. Keep fresh diaphrams and rubber shutoff valves in the top of the oil pressure controlled automatic sediment bowl.
