JD#55 d.o.a.

Plugged my cylinder/concave with a tough/damp wad of clover last nite (key word! LOL ). :~( The concave adjuster is seized and won't move. It might take a person on both ends of the shaft that protrudes thru the body - I can't do anything with it on my own. Long bar thru the cylinder shaft won't back it up it either. Any suggestions how to free her up? I've got a half acre to finish and then put her away for the winter. Thanks.

Remove the plate on the top and bottom of the feeder house and start digging by handful or less at a time. Be careful of the sharp (razor) edges on the bottom plate.

Not fun.

We kept a 5ft crow bar on our 55 and used it to turn the pulley backwards, I used to slug that darn thing all of the time.

Slugs like that can be a pistol can't they? I've spent as much as an hour before getting green slugs out of the baler. A jacknife and a pair of pliers is the only way sometimes. I ran a stone in the rotor on a sheller unit on a New Idea Uni Harvester one time. It was just the right size and shape that it didn't matter how you turned it. Spent hours standing on my head with that one. I don't remember how I did finally get it out. I just remember somebody came around taking a dog census while I was upside down in there. WRONG time for somebody from the government to stick his nose in my business.

A guy around used to drive his gleaner to the top of a hill shut it off and start rolling backwards with the separater in gear and dump the clutch when he thought he had enough speed to back the slug out. Lee

Sounds like a great idea to me! Trouble is it's a long way to any hill around here that will put gravity to work for me.
I guess it's down to the sharp knife and pliers thing.

Put opower takeoff in gear. Put tractor in high gear. Pull backworks with another tractor. Bernie Steffen

I used to do that with my 55. To remedy the situation I would drop the head, park it away from everything and on a gravel surface, with a flowing garden Hose in one hand and my Oxy/Acet. Torch in the other proceed to carefully burn away the lodged mass of vegetation. Not smart or safe but that is how I did it in extreme situations. Can't recommend it but my old machine was not worth much and if it burned up I figured, good excuse to get a good one.JC
