JD 60, good for baling ?

Does a JD 60 have a live PTO?

I want a JD 630 to do haying chores. As they have power steering, live PTO, etc. But none around her locally in WA state. There is a JD 60 for sale here though, hence my question.

My 60 can bale just fine but Power Steering and live PTO were later options and you can find 60s with or without them. Paul

Years ago we pulled a 24T with a 60, always wished for a slower choice of ground speeds

Be carefull as ps. and live pto were optional on 60,620,630 ask the owner and go look at it in person.

Ahhh good point, I have heard that those older john deeres have faster gears in them, and to run them slower, less RPMs, which causes the baler on the PTO to shear the pin, or run the baler terribly. Was not aware the 60 had the fast ground speeds.

1st in a 60 should be slow ? and should be the same gears as in a 620,630 but a 70 was geared faster.

I also thought the 60 would have slower speeds. I use an early styled A sometimes but when the rows are heavy, 1st gear is too fast for my 24T & of course no live power. But the late A's & B's were geared down slower than the early styled & that should have carried over to the 60 I would think?

60's had a creeper 1st gear. Make certain it has the live pto option.
Check around the cylinder head for seepage. It's usually not a major issue.Just a matter of properly installing the cylinder head.

Almost all 60's had independant live pto. Some 60's had power steering, but a lot didn't. The transmissions have, as standard equipment, a 1 1/2 mile per hour first gear. The 50's also had the 1 1/2 mph first gear. The 70's were 2 1/2 mph. One and a half mile per hour is real slow! A man walks at about 2 mph.

I tried baling with a B and 1st was too fast and I sheared pins left and right.

Not sure I agree "almost all 60s had live pto" I have six model 60s and only 1 has live pto (it is the only one with power steering also, a 1956 model) .......all mine are early models though, 53-54. Best to check.

I guess I should have said "around here". In fact I've never seen a 60 without live pto. Around here is the cash grain region of central Illinois. Farmers around here usually bought pretty well loaded up tractors, as far as options went.

There's a 1954 60 rowcrop with the transmission driven pto sitting in my Father's shed.
The 60 came from Saskatchewan. It was surprising it had any pto or rockshaft coming from there. No power steering either.

Your right on that. Every region has different requirements. I think the reason so many had live pto's around here was corn pickers. And the same reason that power steering was snapped up as soon as it became available. Those heavy old mounted pickers weren't much fun with no power steering. And a live pto made them more user friendly too!

We used our 60 with live PTO and standard sterring to square bale hay for many years. It worked very well. At the end the pto stuck engaged and we just cranked the tractor and baler together, kinda rough on the starter but it got us through the year then we bought a 4010. There was no trouble with gears or ground speed or shear pins.
