JD 7000 Planter Guage Wheel Repl

I replaced a gauge wheel yesterday - whole wheel assembly on my planter and it does not run true - bought from "All State Ag Parts"...not really sure its their part that is the problem - more concerned its the gauge wheel arm that accepts the bearing end that is loose - that is where the wobble seems to be.

Anyone ever have this before? I read about lots of guys having wobble problems w their wheels and this gauge wheel fell off during replants last year and I didn"t even know it was missing (beans were a foot tall during replanting) till my combine ate it (the gauge wheel)...

And this brings me to my last question...the gauge wheels are all pretty old - but only one more wobbles...should I be replacing both sides of that row unit w new gauge wheels or is doing one new wheel and leaving one old on the other side OK?

Thanks for any help...

The pin that the arm goes on wears I replaced all my arms with the up grade kit from shoup it took all the free play out it is well worth the money in the long run it take all the play out of them and you don't have to fool with the shims to keep the wheels tight to the openers.

But its not loose there...I can't produce any wobble there...its loose at the gauge wheel fitting on the lower part of the arm...

You mean it is loose where the bearing goes in the arm with the roll pin also sometimes when the wheel is put together they don't get the bearing true in the wheel i have don't a few and in easy to get the bearing to be a little off and it will wobble in looks true if you look at it but it will wobble it just has to be a tad off and it will wobble like heck.

Yes exactly...but if I don't spin the wheel, just wobble the wheel - I can visually see it wobble in the arm hole with the roll pin (lower hole)...

I've read where they guys that do their own tire replacement get that bearing out a bit...(which is why I bought the assembly) but visually - I can see it wobble at the other end...so it seems that would be problem...just not sure how it could wear like that...that is not a moving part considering that roll pin in there...

I have never seen one be loose there most of the time we have to put a little heat on them and knock them out with a hammer to get the old bearing out of the arm.

Try putting the wheel on another arm and see what happens that will tell you where the problem is if is the arm or the wheel.
My brother was in the navy with a Tom Barto he was from Davidson S.C. by any chance it wouldn't be you?

i totaly agree with mudcreek i did our 6rn 2 yrs ago with the shoup parts much better than shims , do it right the first time , only get 1 chance to plant , besides a possible replant
