JD 7210 overheating

Just bought a 7210 MFWD with a cab at an estate auction the other week. When spreading manure the digital guage on the dash runs on the hot side and when you really run it hard it gets in the red and the alarm goes off. I know if its doing it now that come summer time it will be useless. When i cut it off and open the hood it doesn't seem like its that hot and you can crack the cap and there's not even that much pressure on it so i'm thinking that its not really running hot. Is there anything like a sending unit or something electrical that is to blame. Thanks for any input.

When the alarm goes off, get out and see if you can touch the radiator hoses. You should be able to for a couple seconds. Sounds like you have a sensor going bad, we had the same thing happen on our 4455s. Alarm goes off, but if you lightly touch the radiator hoses with out it being to hot then its a sensor.

Warning: this is not a green tractor story- but still food for thought.
On my tractor, when the temp. gauge reaches the top, it starts flashing, a warning light comes on, a buzzer sounds, then the automatic shut down kicks in.
I expected some duplication, or back-up. But no! All this is based on the one temp. sensor. So a malfunction in that sender, or the one circuit going to it, and you could be stopped.
It would be interesting to find out if yours is the same way. Maybe just a simple sender!

get an IR thermometer and measure the temperature of the inlet and outlet house of the radiator and the engine. Home Cheapo sells them, and they are on line a dime a dozen.

Sounds like a sensor to me if you can touch the radiator houses.

I don't know the 7210 that well but my 6400 had a problem a few years ago with what looked like overheating, but temps were near normal. We replaced thermostats, coolant, guage, etc. Come to find out it was the cab ground to the engine. It was bolted to the bracket holding the fuel filter, and the bolt had vibrated loose. I'd be baling or other job, look at the guage, and it would be in the red one minute, and normal the next.. Tightened it one day, and haven't had a problem since.
