I know this tractor os a little new to be posting here, but

Test drove a 8100, the powershift works good, but most of the gears go in nice, but there are a few that really seem to jump. In reverse it will jump out of 3rd and go to second. The guy said thats normal because the tractor"s rpms weren"t high enough.
I"m thinking thats a load of crap, or is it?

That is a piece of crap...No thats NOT normall.. Would it be normal if you were driving down the highway in your new caddy and all of a sudden it goes into Park ? Probably not..I have many hours on the 8000 series and NONE of them would do this. The speed has nothing to do with it at all. They will go into all reverse gears at any speed including Road gear wide open.....

Let me make this clear if you didn't understand what I was talking about. They will go into Reverse at any speed if you pull the lever back and over to the left then UP into Reverse at any speed, JD Rep showed me that. He claimed it was a failsafe ...didnt or not suppose to hurt anything... that was in wide open throttle in 10th gear. I bout crapped myself. But then again if I was spending 60-80 grand on a tractor I wouldn't recommend that at all...I would say there is something wrong with the trans if that happens automatically...Look For a better machine..I personnaly like the 8400 with Front Wheel Assist. A bit more power but its nice to have more then enough power..

Husker44a, about vehicle going into park. We actually had an 8000 series go into park while going road speed down a paved road with a loaded 800 bushel auger wagon behind. It left some major skid marks with duals on tractor and corn all over but kept upright, can't remember much about the repair since I wasn't at the dealership very long at the time but the skid marks were there a long time. chris

I have an 8400 that will shift from R4 to R3 if the rpms are not high enough. It is even stated in the owners manual so I am not sure about R3 to R2 So it could be true

Kent, this was actually a very common problem with the early 8000 series tractors. I agree it should have broke the park pawl, but it rarely did...

They did shift rough in some gears. They are shifting two clutch packs at once. They actually where hesitating just a little. Also they will shift out of high reverse if the engine RPMs are not high enough. The transmission pressure has to be above a certain pressure for them to shift into high reverse.

The 8000 series do not have a park pawl. They have two of the planetary clutch packs that are spring loaded in to applying at the same time therefore locking the transmission in "park". Also they where known to shift into park while at road speeds. If the tramsmission controller lost the single from the output sensor for just a few seconds they could shift into park.
