JD 830 Windrower

I have an 830 windrower with a weak hydraulic pump that picks the platform up. The pump is no longer available. Would anyone on this forum have one or has used any other type pump that would work. Still a good machine but would not work well without the pump. If someone would have a parts machine for sale in the surrounding states of Oklahoma I may travel for it.

It could just be a weak relief valve spring? The hydraulic pump on Dad's old 800 will almost stall the engine at idle if the platform or reel hits max lift height.
How much boost are the helper springs on the lift cylinders giving? How wide of a platform? The springs need to be adjusted to carry almost all the header weight when at full lowered. The platform skid/wear plates should barely drag when cutting. Reduced wear of the wheels, chains & belts etc too.

Buick, the pathetic little aluminum pumps DEERE used on the 800's and 830's die an early death 'cause they are used as the belt tightener for the entire "head" drive. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

I mounted the pump from a 95 combine on mine years ago, and it was still working the last year I farmed, '97.

The old 800 at home must be the exception. Still the factory pump with lots of capacity.
I can't even count the number of complete knife/cutterbar and guard sets that swather has worn out. With a scrawny little 10ft header that machine cut hundreds of acres of hay per year and thousands of mixed grains. From 1976 until we started combining straight in the late 1990's.

The old pump has been getting weaker over the last couple years. It will work well when cold but in 100 degree weather it will almost not pick the platform up when the oil gets hot. I think it's about gone.

We have yet to hear were those platform lift cylinder springs are set at.
Flushing and filling the hydraulic system with 50 or 60 weight motor oil would likely limp the system along for the remainder of the swather's lifespan.

I have not adjusted the springs but with the platform down the wear plates do not scuff the ground? It will work fine until the oil heats up and then the performance falls off. Your right on the heavier oil but it was a good cheap machine and I only cut about 40 acres a year so I'm hoping to use it as long as I can still make repairs to it. I didn't think something like the hydraulic pump would not be available somewhere but its not ( salvage only)Thanks for you advice!!

Looks like the pump on the 800 and 830 are the same ones. I would be interested in it if you would like to sale it and wouldn't mind shipping it on UPS, FedEx, etc. Just drop me an email @ [email protected],or give me your phone # and I will give you a call and maybe we could work out something. Thanks!!
