JD-A 42inch back wheels

looking at a jd-70 now the man show me a jd -a, stuck with loader for $800 But I never seen one 42 inch back wheels they are cast rims thanks cdv

I know where there is a 48 - 52 B with the 42 in rear wheels. I think it is kind of rare but there wwer a few fitted with 42 in wheels.

i don"t know the rarity for sure but they are something a little different. on most a"s and b"s with the 42in rubber the whole rear axle housing is different. look closely where the drawbar frame connects to the axle housing. this has more to do with it being a wide or a narrow than the current front end. also the axles are longer most of the time. Is this a late-styled Model "A"? The rear axle housing casting number on that tractor is most likely A3271R. If so, the tractor is either a Model "AN" or "AW" depending on what front axle assembly (16-inch single front or tall spindle wide front) was on the tractor when it left the factory. The "AN" and "AW" production numbers were a small percentage of the Model "A" total production.

Here in Southern New Jersey it is rare to find an "A" or "B" not on 42" rims. Most of these tractors were used for cultivation and had the long axles with dished cast center wheels that could be reversed for a 10ft tire spacing. The 42' rims gave a little extra height and maybe some extra traction in our very sandy soils. After farming here in NJ for more years then I like to remember, it seems strange to me to see the "A" or "B" on 38" rims.

You have received good advise from the other responders. The true AN and AW came standard with the rear casting mentioned and with the 42" wheels. I beleive 1949 was the last year. At the same time 42""s could be had as options so they can be found on many axles. I have a 49 A with the correct axle and the 42"s. Its a great tractor in the collection but the old B on 38"s will out pull it.
