JD A backfires

I just bought a JD "A". The tractor is a little hard to start, and when you do get it started, it backfires a lot. Someone told me to adjust the points. Anyone know what the point gap should be set at? Any other ideas what may be wrong?
Thnx, Dave

Have you checked the timing marks? What about the carb? Does it backfire under load or idle? Both?
What year? Battery or just mag? LEN
