JD-A engine stuck

Got a JD-a today ,last ran 2 years ago,sitting inside but its stuck,what sould I do to start freeing it up put some wd-40 in the spark plug holes or somehting like that thanks cdv

That might work. Automatic transmission fluid is good. Might be worthwhile taking off the tappet cover and making sure that the valves are not stuck and avoid a bent pushrod or broken rocker arm. Hope this helps.

I would fill the cylinders about half-way with a mix of Kerosene and ATF fluid..
Let it soak for about a week..
Then, remove the flywheel cover and use a ratchet-type Kum-along, run from the forward frame, to the cable wrapped thru the hole in the flywheel that gives you the best leverage..
It should pull on the outer rim of the flywheel..
You can put a lot of pressure on it this way..
Try it first in one direction one day and then reversed the next..
Seems to be effective..

A little more info would be good, like year, sn#, style, why its stuck.
I wonder how it got stuck if it’s only been sitting 2 years?
My 47 A sat underneath a fallen shed for around 10 years and the MT sat in the back of a tenant house for about 10 years, they both were fine, the MT did have a stuck valve that I found the hard way after pulling the tractor off and bending a push rod. Its definitely good advice to remove the valve cover and make sure each valve is free before any attempts at turning the engine.

My 48 A and 56 60 were stuck and had been sitting for about 20 years in the weather. I had to remove the heads and soak it with penetrating oil and then put it in high gear and rock it back and forth to break it loose. Then I had to remove the pistons and hone out the cylinders. There was a while lot of crap between the top of the piston and the head, it would have probably been a very bad thing if I had of just broke it loose and tried to start them without taking the heads off. Also in a moment of pure stupidity I tried to use the drawbar wedged into the flywheel on the 60 as a lever and pried back and forth on the flywheel trying to break the pistons loose, all I broke was the FLYWHEEL. Old cast iron stuff is fragile.

A neighbor had a JD 60 that stuck over a 6 month period..it was outside and had leaky exhaust gaskets...
Got stuck on one cylinder..used the below mentioned procedure..Maybe it was not stuck "all that bad", but was definitely Stuck tight..!!
Once it rolled over about 3 times, it started and ran fine with no smoke..
We didn't force it to roll over, just got it to roll a little, and teased it back and forth, until it rolled over..
Good luck, these can go "either way"..

CDV, I'm surprised that no one has mentioned this before. The way I get suspected "not stuck much" engines free is, go and buy a large can of PB Blaster at your local Auto Zone, Oreileys, Advance Auto, ect, remove both spark plugs, spray PB Blaster in each plug hole for 15 seconds each. Lock the right rear brake. Jack up the left rear wheel just enough to clear the ground. Place the transmission in the highest gear (6th for styled and 4th for unstyled). Grab the wheel (the one off the ground)and rock it back and forth (with the clutch engaged). If this does not work at first, leave it alone for a hour and repeat the PB Blaster for 15 seconds in each hole and rock the elevated wheeel again. Of course you want to make sure the valves are not stuck as mentioned above and, if you have already added some other fluid such as automatic transmission fluid and kerosene then you will want to remove as much of that as you can before you shoot the PB Blaster in as the other fluid might dilute the PB Blaster and diminish it's working ablilty. If the tractor is a 47 to 52 model then you can remove the plugs under the block and drain, If not then I use a battery acid bulb with a piece of plastic pipe to reach the bottom of the cylinder thru the spark plug hole and suck out the fluid that way. As you rock the elevated wheel, look at the flywheel to see if it moves. If it is really stuck bad then the block will have to be removed and the piston pressed out. Anyway, try the elevated wheel and get back with us and let us know how it turns out.

We had an old boy working for us that brought in a stuck A. We pulled it around the shop 500 times with a 4020 to no availe. He put a quart or more of brake fluid in the cylinders came back next morning and turned over by hand. I thought he was nuts but some of these old boys are smarter as I get older
