JD A question's?

I just bought a JD A about 45 yr and its got the optonall electric start , i think where theres teeth ontop of the flywheel, and starter next too it on tp of case left side,
has the little pedal that actuates it when you start it,
really neat in a way even if it isnt totally original?
Is there supposed to be a cover on there wheere the flywheel is?
dosnt look like it?

I used to have a 46 A and it was set up the same way. On that one, there was a sheet metal band all the way around the outside diameter of the flywheel over the ring gear. The face of the flywheel was open.

From your explanation,what you have sounds like the correct set up for an early A with an electric starter. In March of 1947, when the last series A came out, the flywheel was completely covered.

Hi ken this one has the starter on top of the teeth and the hoop of the starter gear on top of the flywheel,

I agree with DickD. It sounds like you have the “original” set up on your tractor.

Last weekend I pulled the starter off my 46A we named "Easy" and had it tested before I “spruced” it up.

While everything was apart, I also cleaned and painted the flywheel cover that Ken L. described.

The starter is mounted above the flywheel ring gear by 3 bolts.

Two of these bolts pass through the “eyes” on the ends of the flywheel cover.

Ive got the same set up on my 41 A, as it turns out thats what it is,
as i know they didnt make any more of them past 41,( slant dash,)
same as yours the ring sheet meatal probably fell off yrs ago,

Ive got green, and red, and a yellow minnie combine too,
a 2670, and coming is a green JD 45 combine that this guy that had the case is giving me for cheap and its all there too, w/ a cab to boot,
also a green JD older 2 bottom plow manual lift steel wheel's,

No I pretty much meant what I said. Unless there is another series A after 1952, that, to me, is the last series.

Oh really , i didnt know that guy this book i have says after 41 they went to the vertical look and stopped the slant dash huuu i dinnt know that,
