JD B WITH 50 RODS

I HAVE A 48 B WITH WHAT I THINK ARE 50 RODS CAUSE THEY HAVE JOURNAL BEARINGS. WHAT I NEED TO KNOW IS WHAT THE TORQUE SPEC IS FOR A ROD WITHOUT BABBIT BEARINGS AND IF THATS WHAT THESE RODS ARE....THANKS

don't know about specs, but thats what you have. i think i went from a chart in my b manual for mine, but its been so long that i don't remember.

NOPE. 48 has insert bearings. in fact, all after s.n. 96000 were listed as either way in my parts book, & after 201,000 had them for sure, which is first 48.

gtx your book is wrong all Bs had babbit brg rods from the factory the insirt type were frist used in the modlel 50 from the factory they than became avabule as replacement for babbit rods

The 48 B would have been manufactured with babbited rods. It is my understanding that the insert type rod bearings were first used right at the end of B production (1952?), and were certainly standard on the 50. The last parts book available from Deere for the B tractor was published March 1 of 1960. The insert type rods are listed as the proper replacement part because they are, even though they were not available in 1948.

how is a genuine original jd parts book from the dealer wrong? its not wrong. just not printed in 48. probably a few years newer. how many 48 tractors do u think are still around with original rod bearings? id guess almost none. any replacements would have certainly been inserts, cheaper than babbitted. so to me that means they're B rods, & correct at that. maybe the 50 rods are the same part # too i dont know.

I have 2 1943 tractors and a 49 and 51 that are all running around with babbit rods. Oh, your book is wrong, the 48 B that you say was made with insert rods, not!!

We have a '48 B that grandpa bought brand new and it has babbit bearings in it. They were shimmed? back in '64 when grandpa needed a few more ponies and had it bored .045 and had M&W's installed. Next year bought a 3020 and parked it.

Ware to start 1st 1947 prod started at 191303 and ended at209294 late styeled B started at20100 my parts book is dated 3-60 lists ab355r for b before serial 95999 this is babbited rod next listed ab2717r fits 96000 to the end of b prod this is also a babbited rod this can be subbed by ab4626r witch is a insert type rod it came out with model 50 prod a b and most g all came from factory with babbit rod and mains now if you new any thing about old jds you would know that battit rods will avable many years as rebuilt from JD parts maybe if you don,t know what you are taking about you should be quite and learn i have been working onJDs for 50 years and dont like your BS it very miss leading for the guys that want to learn Kent

Field Service Bulletin 213 (March 1954) gives 63 ft-lbs torque for B>201000, which came with babbit style bearings, and 80-90 ft-lbs for the 50, which came with insert style rod bearings. It was common for 50 connecting rods (casting number B3201R) to be used in B's from 96000-end, to take advantage of the insert-type bearings.

So, you might check your rod numbers, and assuming they are B3201R, they should be torqued to 80-90 ft-lbs.
