A friend just bought a JD B late model {square axle} and it has a hour meter{not a tachometer} on it. He thinks it is original and I don't think so. I can not find information about it. Does anyone know?

Tom,

An hour meter was an option on the late model B. You will find them in the parts catalog. I believe they were installed by the dealer, or the owner, and may not have been available until the end of production. I do not think they were installed at the factory. I would be interested to know how and where this one was installed, as I have a NOS kit from Deere, and I would like to install it on my B

I had a model 50 like that. I was assured by the original owner it was on it's second time around !
It was still on of the better ones I have bought as you would of never guess it had THAT many hours on it.

The hour meter looks like a clock and was installed in the middle of the right side of the hood over the magneto. They were a factory option installed by the dealer.

Tom and others,
If you search the archives for Hobbs meter you will find information about the hour meter. It was an available factory option - Field Service Bulletin 165 (Nov 15, 1949) notes "As the majority of engine hour meters and pressure switches manufactured and supplied by the Hobbs Corporation are being installed at the factory....". They were built by the John W. Hobbs Corporation, Springfield, IL. The 6V version for the B is listed in a Kansas City Branch House price list dated 12-10-51 as p/n AB4282R for 18.00 List Price. The 12V version is AA5338R for an A.

FSB185 (Nov. 1951) notes that the Hobbs hour meter attachment is now available for field installation on A, B, G, D tractors. If the tractor has battery ignition the meter hooks to the ignition switch - if a magneto is used an AA5337R pressure switch ($4.00) is installed at the gauge and closes when the oil pressure reaches 4 psi. Installation information has been posted earlier and is in the archives as noted above.

Hobbs meters are now produced by Honeywell corp - see http://content.honeywell.com/sensing/hss/hobbsparts/products/dcHourMeters.asp
