The JD "A"s and "B"s from late '47 through the end of each model's production used stamped steel for the front frames...though earlier "A"s and "B"s (and all "G"s) had cast frames. Then when the 50/60/70 era dropped the letter series, none continued with stamped frames. Anyone know why?
Also the 50 looks as if the frame is unusually long. Any reason or is it just my perception?

even earlier a's & b's had welded angle-iron frames. the stamped were discontinued due to weakness. almost all are cracked. loaders, cultivators, etc. also much better access to engine on other frame types.

Well, the first time I became acquainted with John Deeres was in 1951, and the pressed steel was what was current - making A and B tractors from that era of interest to me now. I, of course, note that those from earlier than '47 had cast units as the G always did.
Why did Deere opt for the steel at all (if anyone knows)?
Where should one check for cracks when considering a steel-frame A or B?
Thanks!

You are using the wrong terms to be right. The first A's and B's used cast iron frames. Then they went to angle iron frames. The G always used and angle iron frame, never cast iron. During the war the A and B went to cast iron frames. After the war they went back to angle iron frames. Then came out your pressed steel frames that you are thinking of.

I have to disagree about the "G" front support (frame) being always cast, my '46 GM is angle iron weldment and the donor tractor I got the replacement from was the same. I think the stamped frame was cheaper and thought to be strong enough until loaders were used and things started to crack. Seems I heard cast was used during the war due to shortage of structural steel.

The cracks/breaks will be either at the back toward the top where the frame bolted to the main case, or close to the front not far back from the bolt pattern there.
