Jd G generator

Let me start with everything worked when I started disassembly a year and a half ago. Took it apart due to bad radiator core and general clean up/lube/love.

Put it all back together and fan hits generator shaft. Generator brackets line up well, but I'm off 1/2". I'm baffled.

Where did I go wrong?

.The spacer on the bottom two generator pivot mounts on the wrong side?
The pulley side of the generator, has the mounting ears touching the green mount ears, no spacer there. The other end has washers to take up slop.

If i was to move the generator back, it would be touching on the pivot points on the pulley end, but the other end would be way out there and need a bunch of washers/shims to make it tight.

Do you have the pulley on backwards
Funny you mention backwards.... I think the pulley is correct, but the fan is actually backwards. I think flipping the fan over will solve the fan hitting the generator shaft.

I also pulled another rebuilt generator out and put it on. Pulley still wasn't lined up. So I took pulley off and flipped it, makes it pretty close (close enough for me). But I was still fighting the fan hitting it, but hopefully flipping it around will solve that.

The fan is definitely on backwards if it rotates counterclockwise when you look at it from the generator/engine side. The concave (scoop) of the blades goes to the rear to pull air back through the radiator.

Yes, Jim.Me points out, the fan is backwards. Installing it correctly will give you clearance needed between the fan and generator. Unfortunately that isn't an easy process at this point.

Your generator pulley is on backwards. The longer hub on the pulley goes away from the generator towards the radiator.

Your fan is on backwards and needs to be switched around, but flipping it won't change the pulley alignment.

1949 G generator. Tractor is pretty much all original.View attachment 141963
Due to an over oiled generator and lack of cleaning maintenance (wink) I can’t tell which way the generator pulley is actually mounted. If you interpret the somewhat blurry depiction in the online parts catalog as being correct ET in reply 9 has the correct reply. The pulley should be mounted with the longer center hub towards the front. JD G parts catalog

yes pulley is correctly mounted as show. appears the belt is out of alignment for some other reason. the longer hub goes towards the generator. maybe check that fan shaft pulley .

So turn it around.
I think you might be trying to be funny. The reply is in reference to the photo in the OP’s opening post. His pulley is on correctly as is this one on Fordy20’s tractor. Or are you saying to heck with the originality and turn it so the belt lines up better? I am not sure what all could affect the front to rear position of the fan pulley.
