JD G vs. GM

Not being a "G expert", I need some help with the following:
When, and with what approx. serial no. did the GM designation start??, and...
When, and at what approx. serial no. did the GM's end??

Had you gone to the search block atop this page & entered GM, you would have found this 8/25/07 thread response from 105EB:

"The model "G" was styled in 1942, and also received improvements such as a six-speed transmission, optional electric starting, etc. Due to War Production Board policies, Deere could not raise the price above the unstyled "G", unless the tractor was given a new model designation, and therefore the tractor became the model "GM", and retained that designation from introduction in early 1942 until March of 1947, when the designation once again reverted to the model "G".

"Letter series" tractors built into 1953 included the "AR"/"AO", "D", "G", and "R". The "R" was built until the end of the 1954 model year. (105EB)

Many of us consider the "pan-seat" version of the styled "G" tractor as GM models, from G13000 through G-25999. Opinions vary -- this is mine! (PatB)

Thanks for the prompt reply. You're right, "opinions vary". The 2-cyl. Mag. card shows 1947 beginning with no. 18853, and 1948 starting with 25235. Yes, my remembrance of the "GM" was the pan seat and the batteries in the frame in from of the valve cover, and the "G" that followed had the batteries under the seat.

It is kind of funny so long as folks don't take things personal on the forum -- the funny part being that when I speak without solid knowledge, it is an opinion. And when I speak from a position of facts, it is no longer an opinion. I have ventured into both realms.

Some questions posted here actually draw opinions. Issues involving yellow fan blades (why & when), red filler caps for the gasoline tank (all-fuel tractors), the color of Delco items on the tractor, and how many holes your pan seat should have -- all bring about much commentary from the peanut gallery! 'Funny to read some of the crap folks write. Yet, each of these issues have definite purposes and/or starting and ending points.

And wheels -- my gosh, some very noteable people have made great study on wheels, and frankly -- even they are stumped for a bit with some questions raised! So long as we (1) stay on topic and (2) refrain from becoming personal -- all seems to go very well.

Close but no cigar, Pat. The Model "GM" was changed back to the Model "G" beginning with serial number 23000. About the only difference was that the serial number plate now read Model "G" Tractor, and that "GN" and "GW" models with the two-piece pedestal became available after 23000. The "square seat" Model "G" Series tractors became available at serial number 26000.

I agree Mr. Pat

-Or also the colors of generators and lights and dashes. Wow, that used to drive me nuts sometimes.

I just wish that people would WRITE that kind of stuff down so they NEVER forget.
