JD Govoner weights

How much shod be taken off the weights to lighten them up on a 48 john deere A?

dont rightly know a buddy of mine has an unstyled B had troulble with his went to a deere shop and was told that the weights on a 620 where the same part # thats what he put in cant tell any dif.

What exactly would be the benefit of this? Would it turn more rpm?

Seems to me a while back they all have the same part #, contrary to what some may think(and I may be wrong too, but that's how I remember it), my son drilled holes in his to make them lighter so they would fly out faster, make it more responsive. Did it help??? In his mind it did, but we went round and round on that one. LOL!

try a new spring after 50 years it would have to be a little week wouldnt you

All weights ar the same. B or A no difference. Take 12 grams off each weight.

Don't waste your time. Put in a new governor spring (just one) and your tractor will be very snappy. Adjust the rod from the governor to the carburetor a full hole short (as opposed to the "half-hole" that was originally recommended) and you will be happy with the result. Drilling out the weights upsets the balance between the spring and the weights. You will be "wrong" somewhere in the torque curve. Mike

Actually I've been able to "wake up" my JD 2 cyls. by just putting a short length of flat strap iron (1x1/8x3 in.long) behind the leaf spring on the govenor. Slot the strap so it fits in where the leaf spring mounts to the shaft, then "experiment" by bending the strap to get the effect you want.

I have two springs on it now.

No need to remove weight from your governor weights. With two springs they aren't doing anything now anyway. Mike
