JD Late 4020 Powershifts

Does anyone know how many JD side console(69 and newer) 4020's were built with a powershift transmission?

As I understand it no one has that number in there hands but it could be done if someone was willing to put in untold hours of looking at reams of production records from waterloo. Maybe somone else has a better answer but to the best of my knowledge that is the deal.

Can't help you with the numbers, but it brings memories of a neighbor who bought a new one exactly like that in 69. Boy were we jealous of him! He farmed 320 acres, and we thought that huge tractor was way overkill for the acres he farmed.

He traded off a really nice 730 gas. Jim

i dont know much about 730 gases but i would think the powershift would be rarer

They built about 3900 gas 730's. They built over 55,000 console 4020's. If only a tenth of them were powershifts they would outnumber 730 gassers. I bet the number is alot higher than that. Just a guess.

well side console powershifts were only from 69 to 73 i believe so that would be somewhere around 25,000 and i would think powershifts would be around 5 percent but thats just a guess maybe lower

I did some research. The number of 4020's built from 1969 to the end of production in 72 was 55,851. Pre 1969 prduction was 129,906. I looked it up to make sure. It was in the last two cylinder magazine. They break it down farther there were 53,792 row crop diesel 4020's built 69-72. I have no idea what the percentage of them were powershift and they dont know either. I would guess around here that maybe 30 or 40% of the 4020's are power shift and it seems like the later ones even more so. That could easily be a regional thing with a couple of dealers really pumping them out. Hard to tell and we may never know for sure. There were a couple of things in this article that caught my eye. From 69-72 they built 836 LP gas tractors and 842 gasoline tractors. Do the math on that 55,851 total and less than 850 of either of those. Im thinking those tractors may have some value someday. If we knew the powershift numbers just think how few of those gas and lp tractors were powershift. It is interesting to try to figure out what the next hot thing will be.

A 1969 or later side console was P.S. with a gasoline or LP engine. Is worth more with the original engine than converted to diesel.
I wonder how many have been converted instead of preserved?
