JD Model 44 plow

Recently, I bought a JD model 44 two bottom plow. I thought it was 12", but when I measured plowshare-to-plowshare, it was 14". Drat. I need a 12" for plowing matches.

As I looked closer, it appears to be adjustable, buy switching the front and back bottoms and beams. The beams have a slight curve to them: both curve outward.

If I switched them so they both curved inward, I think I can make them at least 12".

Anyone have a thought on this?

The 44's were made to be switched from 14" to 16", but i'm not aware of one that switchs to a 12" plow. Its dark here now, but I'd have to measure mine to see what the measurement is between the beams. I've got one of both. The 2X12 I've got is a model 52.

I did a little looking through my own photo files, and found a 44 with the beams turned in. I'm assuming it is a 12" since it is a match plow.

The frame measures about 12.5" center to center.

I have a #44 with 12 inch bottoms I would sell. The plow is excellent and located in Wisconsin.

It sounds like you have the 12x14 inch frame. Yes they are made to be switched. You can even use the same bottoms.

Hey Jim! Good to hear that you are getting set for more plowing! Here in Vermont it will soon be pretty hard to get the points in the frozen ground!

Regardless of the plow size, you will do a great job!

The #44 came in three frame sizes: 10"-12", 12"-14", and 14"-16". Given your frame measurement I would assume you have the 12-14 frame. I feel it would be nice to have the 10-12 frame for match plowing since you could set the frame at 10, 11, or 12. By getting a second standard, you could use two standards curving the same direction and make the plow cut 11 inches. The #44 manual even outlines this procedure.

You wouldn't be preparing for match plowing in Ontario would you? What bottoms does your new plow have? EP? or "narrow share" european style bottom?

Yes, it is designed to cut two different widths by swapping standards AND turning the furrow wheel around. The wheel is offset to place it correctly for the cut used. An owners manual would be a help.

Folks, thanks for all of your responses. I switched out the beams over the weekend, turned around the furrow wheel, and viola! I have a 12" plow now.
