JD model 60

I am going to look at a JD 60 with wide front end. Is there anything in particular that I should pay special attention too?
I just found this site and there seems to be a lot of knowledge here.

Thanks

JD 60's are noted for loose clutch drivers and cracked blocks. A loose clutch driver will ruin the splines on the crankshaft and cracked block leads to coolant into the combustion chamber and/or the crankcase. JD 60's w/o power steering are worth less than those with.

Wide front rowcrop or standard chassis?
A low seat standard and in particular a high seat standard are worth more.
Planning at using or collecting?
Look for the PS and live pto options. Bonous if it has rockshaft arms, links etc.

Ok, I'm new to these old tractors. We did have a B back when I was a kid in the late 50's.
So, how do you check for loose clutch drivers? What are they?
Low/High seat standard?????
Rockshaft arms????

Its listed on tractorhouse located in Topeka, KS and my plan would be to use it,pull a baler etc. It does have power steering and a Schwartz front end and 3 pt.

I'm not sure if there is a way to check for a loose clutch driver, externally, if there is some one post it. But, the clutch driver is the part that actaully meshes with the splines of the crankshaft on the right side of the tractor. To get to it you pop the tin cover off of the cluth and there will be a bolt with a large washer under it. You take that off and and you will be able to see the end of the crank and (how far the clutch driver is from being flush with the crank). The driver should be sticking about 1/4" out from being flush. Check to make sure no one has stuck any type of shim material in it as well to fix the situation. If the cluthc driver is pulled on flush then you may have some money in fixing it. Either an undersized clutch driver which i have heard works/doesn't work. Or getting the end of the crank fixed up.

With the tractor shut off---snap the clutch in and try to rock the clutch pulley forward and back--it should try to turn the engine---if you feel a bump-or slack the driver is loose---If some one has shimmed the splines then this method won't work

The rockshaft arms are the square pieces of metal that come out of the powertrol right under the seat. This is where you will attach the upper three point arms to it. Since the tractor already has a three point. This machine does have rockshafts

Be advised, the "All-Fuel" 60 won't do much more than a good "B"...

The Gasoline 60 is better, but a 620 or 630 is much more powerful, and has a True 3-Point that works a lot better for plowing..

Power steering is not mandatory on these--Nice with a Loader, but a source of leaks, etc too..
I actually prefer NO power steering, to PS that "fights ya"..!!
Listen to it RUN..does it "Hammer" anywhere..??
If so, it might be that clutch-driver,or a loose Flywheel, or a Rod, or Main Bearing..
Run it until it is really well warmed up..How does the Engine oil look..?? Is it normal, or Super thick, like STP..?? Is is GREY.(Water)..?
Look up under the engine block and see if it has a patch under there, from Freezing and breaking..
Drive it around and see if it shifts Normally and has ALL the Gears..!!
PTO work (and shut off..??
Hydrolics work..?
Good Luck and I hope it is a Keeper..!!

Ron.
Are the Exhaust gaskets Blown..??
If so, that usually means the Head has to come off to be machined flat again..
