Cannot get coolant to mix through the system..Rad comes to a boil, and the bottom pipes are cold. Will run tractor for about 10 minutes, and water will boil on the top of rad and not circulate throughout the engine. Water temp guage does not work any ideas???

Not that this explains your problem but the cooling system is thermo-syphon hot water rises, cold goes to the bottom. lower pipes generally will be cooler. Bill

David, the coolant will not mix on it's own very well in a thermo-syphon system and cause the sypmtoms you describe. If you drain your coolant and mix it beforehand it will work much better. Mike

The coolant mix is ok, but can't seem to get the coolant to circulate throughtout the engine. When The tractor is running, the bottom pipe is cold, which leads me to think there is a thermostat in there somewhere, or it is not circulating. I eventually shut off the tractor in fear of overheating it

The M cooling system workes just fine but you need to know how it workes. Is it clean? Take out the radiator and flush with water. The water comming out should be clean and the same volume that goes in. Take your garden hose and flush out the block. If there is rust or other junk comming out, you may have some blockage in there which needs more drastic steps. When you refill the cooling system, the coolent must be above the top hose or the water will not circulate. A clean M cooling system will run about 140 or 150 F. If it runs at 190 F you are still OK. A little steaming from the cap on a cool day is nothing to worry about. Think about all the moving parts that you don't have to replace. Ed

Hi.There is no stat in the cooling system. The hot water flows up to the radiator, which in turn pulls the cool water into the engine.Really a very simple idea with no moving parts. If the top pipe is hot and the bottom is cold, you're core is plugged,or the lower pipe/inlet is plugged. With no temp gauge are you sure it's hot? It sounds to me like the head gasket may be bad which will pump you're system full of air.
It may seem to overheat, but a much different problem. Hope this helps,Russ.

Drain the coolant in a bucket, mix it up good and put it back in. You will blow the head gasket (if youre lucky) by not premixing the antifreeze. It causes hot spots where the antifreeze isn't mixed. It will never stay together long enough to mix itself on a thermosiphon system. Do not fill the radiator all the way up. There should be a few inches of air at the top for it to work correctly. Once you do this just leave the radiator cap off and use a thermometer to check the temp untill you can get a new guage.

As stated, there is NO thermostat. You could have a partial or full blockage in the block or radiator.
Hot water from the engine flows up to the upper pipe and flows in to the radiator, pushing cooler water from the bottom of the rad back in to the engine. That is how it works. No pump, no thermostat.
Never try to mix antifreeze in any radiator system, even if it has a water pump. Either use premixed or mix it well prior to putting in the rad.

ThankU Russ for your time...This tractor was my Dad"s and was sitting for a number of years, and I decided to take it out of the shed, and work on it.
