JD SCV QQuestion

Hello. I'm replacing the o-rings in my breakaway couplers due to some leaks. Mine had back-up rings and o-rings in the housing where they are leaking from (parts 27-29 in drawing). My rebuild kit has those, and some one piece seals in it. I would think the seals would be better to use? Has anyone ever used quad rings in this part of the coupler? I know they work better for the tip seals. Just wondering what would be the best to use to prevent leaks? Also, how important is it to service/replace the ball and inner seal of the coupler(parts 16-18 in drawing)? I don't see any rust on the ball, and it's not leaking from there. Any thoughts would be appreciated! Thanks!

You can use the seals or the o-ring/back up ring for #27 or #28/29,, but I use a solid back up ring and quad ring when I do them, I get them from a Hydro shop..I think it's better..I also use smaller quads for #13/14 the spiral back up rings can loose their shape and the tails bend over the o-ring letting oil follow out..

Thanks, Tim. I thought they would work better. Do you know what size the quad rings are that replace the seals? Does JD parts carry them as well? Also, do you use a backup ring with the smaller quad rings on the lever (13-14)?

Yes I use a solid back up ring, if you have a hydro shop near you just take the o-rings in and they can match them up,the standard size for that o-ring is 214, that size will follow through with the quad ring, the ones I use are called an "X-ring", they have 2 sealing surfaces on the inside, when you cut one in 2 it has an X shape in the cross section...

Thanks again, Tim! I went to a local hydraulic shop and got quad rings, and one piece backup rings for everything in there BUT #16-17 inside the barrel. Forgot to take them with me for sizing! Should I even worry about replacing them, or the steel ball #18 if they aren't leaking? Seems like a real pain to get apart, if not necessary?!? Anything else I should be concerned about while I have them apart?

The quad ring and one piece backup rings fixed all the leaks! Worked really well. Next issue is the the rest of SCV needs to be gone through. There is pressure on the couplers with the lever in the "neutral" position, and they are creeping up and down with pressure tests. I've never rebuilt one of these. The manual makes it seem pretty complicated?!? Should I attempt with some help from the experts here on the forum? My local Deere dealer is crazy high for repairs! Anybody here rebuild these on the side? Possible cost involved??? Thanks!!
