JD3020 shuts down

I have a 3020 JD gas tractor with a rebuilt head and rebuilt carburator. It floods out if idling very much and will shut down at full power. No amount of carb adjustment seems to help. I use this tractor every day HELP???

Look to see if the float is bent or tweaked in anyway. If it is, it will prevent it from moving. Be very gentle when or if you adjust it.

Presuming your 3020 has good spark be looking for a carb problem - especially it’s got the Marvel-Schebler USX (aluminum) carburetor!

The USX carb seems unusually prone to problems. Float binding (rubbing on the sides of the bowl), or float(s) filling with gas and sinking are common. Also the accelerator pump diaphragm (on the back side of the sloped float bowl cover) often develop leaks which then cause flooding/poor running.

Also just because the carb was just rebuilt doesn’t mean it is right! I had similar rich idle, poor running and frequent flooding problems on a friend’s 3020 with a freshly rebuilt USX carburetor. Finally out of desperation I removed and disassembled the carburetor. Inside I found one of the high speed jets loose in it’s seat; also the solenoid shutoff mechanism improperly assembled. Once these problems were corrected and the carb reassembled/adjusted, the 3020 ran fine.
