JD420 Torque

We have inherited a JD 420 and I have been trying to get it to work right. It takes alot of turning on the starter before it hits. Im just wondering if the head is losing compression somewhere. The head gasket is not blown but when it gets hot, oil comes out from between the head and the top of the block. I have not run a compression check on it yet. I am wondering if it would help if I retorque the head or just have it redone. It does not smoke and does not use oil. It just takes alot of turning before it actually cranks. If anyone has any information that could be helpful in this area I would appreciate it so much.
