Getting ready to switch from red to green. Going sat. morning to purchase a 6620 john deere. Its a 1980 model with 3000hrs. The owners son is a mechanic for john deere, so its been well cared for and has many new parts,bearings,belts,etc. comes with a 918 table as well. Never owned a John Deere combine, were these combines decent machines? The owner says it has been very dependable for him he just upgraded to a 9600.

6620 was probly the best combine JD ever built. Talk to anyone that has one and they all love them.

Thanks for easing my mind. Thought i made a good move last year with the MF750, but either the 750 was just a POS, or it was just not taken care of. I have spent more time travelling to dealer for parts and working on the old gal than i have been behind the wheel. Still got beans to cut and times running short!!!!

I agree with Belgian,tough if not impossible combine to beat compared to others in it's class.

You did a good thing! 750 Massey's were built to cut wheat, not corn or beans. Neighbor had one bought new, and it was down for repairs as much as it ran. He told me he had saved $10K over a 6600 Deere, but after a year with the Massey, said he wished he'd spent the extra money. 6620's are a good machine, you'll think you've died and gone to heaven after that Massey.

so did he buy the 6600 new? can't do corn or beans with a Massey? people I know that have 6620's agree they are underpowered.

If that's the case all you need is an allen wrench. Give the pump a little turn.

You may run out of power unloading on the go, going up a hill, with combine at full capacity; but then again you've got a 30 year old combine, so maybe you should just give the old girl a little break.

Most of the time you'll overload the machine before running out of power, though.

underpowered is the best way to have a combine in my opinion. that way you dont stuff it too full, much easier to tell when it gets near capacity, if its gettin tough at night, if there's a bearing or two or a gearbox that aint right anymore etc. just easier on the whole machine if the weak link is the power source. harder to "tear it all to heck"

good machine. have a 7720 and love it. as for the massey its in the name M-mostly f-fixin. i dont know how a 6620 is underpowered, i guess somepeople are too lazy to just turn the pump up if it hasnt got enough snort.

you are right, I just called jd they don't sell any repair parts for their combines as none are ever needed, Shoup put in a jd section just to fill space and make the catalog thicker, the parts aren't really available..

Hmm, funny, I've heard the same thing about IH Axial-Slows. All kidding aside, the 6620 is a good machine, and will eat a 1440AF for breakfast. If the buyer has been suffering through an MF 750, a 6620 is a BIG step up in both performance and reliability.
