A detailed explanation and photo guide of the springs is in the operator's manual. A few sentences over the internet is going to be mostly baffling.

The clutch on the old 100 and 200 series was just a belt being tightened or loosened. The variable speed plate slides in the middle of the intermediate drive pulley. The plate has a bronze bushing in the center. It slides on a chrome plated center bearing holder/hub. You might get it to work by lubing/cleaning the sliding plate and hub. Usually the plate bushing and chrome center get worn and don"t slide easy enough for the clutch spring to pull it back. That is why you need to hook your toe under the clutch pedal and pull it up. The variator is shifted to the low side every time you push the clutch down. It starts out in low and builds back up to the higher speed if you have the speed control set for higher speeds.
The new hub/bearing AM30172 $120.00
The sliding sheave AM30082 $140.00
The side half sheaves threads on the center hub and can be reused. You remove the battery and the bottom of the battery box. The unit comes out the top. The center sheave has to slide by pushing against one side. If it binds then it will not work right. The belts push against the opposite sides of this center sheave. That means it is walking a little, all of the time, as it turns. This is what wears it out. Using the variable speed control does not wear it much. If you really like the mower and plan on keeping it a long time then replace the plate and hub now. The parts have doubled in the last five years. So they are not getting any cheaper. Plus I wonder how long JD will keep suppling them. Not many people will spend $250-$300 dollars on a mower that old.
