Hello,
Im working on a 1964 JD 1010rs. It has a severe leak on the left side where the PTO engagement lever shaft enters the case. Not a real big issues getting it fixed, its just a seal. But what holds the pivot shaft for the lever in the case? It appears the previous owner tried to weld it to the case and made a mess. I assume they were press fit but not sure. Its Item #59 on the breakdown below. Thanks for your help.

You must have the tractor split at this point? The torque tube is a dry compartment. It its leaking oil from there, its leaking from the hydraulic pump (if equipped), transmission, PTO gearbox, or the engine. Again, I assume that the tractor is split and you should be able to see if the pin, item #59 if a through hole is in the torque tube or if it is pressed in. I assume that it is pressed in.
Then again, assuming makes an a$$ out of you and me.

I don't have the tractor split yet. The pin came out with the lever and the splined shaft below. The previous owner made a bracket that prevented the pin and the spline shaft from coming out, and once I removed it everything slid out. I'm glad you told me its a dry compartment. That explains where the hydraulic fluid is going. Thanks!

Assuming its hydraulic fluid, a common cause is the seal on the bottom of the hydraulic pump. Part No. AH15442 (tried to post a screenshot of the diagram but I'm on a work computer and it won't load). Same seal is used in the non-power steering pump and the late style power steering pump. If you have an early P/S pump it uses a different seal that I couldn't get the parts diagram to load the number for. The seal was still available from Deere when I repaired mine a few years ago.

Thanks. I have the late model hydraulic pump. Would you replace more than the bottom seal? It appears like the pump has never been removed. I guess I could replace the seal first then check the pressure after? The power steering did not work when I bought it so I'm guessing it was out of fluid.

Unless you have a borescope, there isn't a way to tell where your excess oil is coming from, and even with a borescope it's probably questionable. Removing the pump and replacing that seal isn't a huge job, maybe 4 hours of work depending on how stubborn your lines and bolts are. When you pull the pump, if you see fluid on the pump drive shaft then that is usually a sign that the seal is bad. It's been a few years since I did mine, but I think its possible to remove the old seal without taking the pump apart (although both the machines I've worked on didn't have power steering). If you have to open the pump to get the old seal out you might have to replace parts 9-11 and 21 in the diagram. The shaft seal is no. 18.

If I were you I would start by pulling the pump and seeing if there's oil on the splines and inspecting the seal. That's the only way that fluid from the hydraulic system could get into the clutch housing. It could also be coming from the transmission, and as stated earlier, it could also be a rear main seal. All of those issues require a split to repair, so starting with checking the pump first is definitely the easiest option.

What kind of fluid are you running in your transmission? If you can tell what kind of fluid is leaking that can help narrow it down.

I'll pull the pump this weekend and check it out.

I just bought this tractor a couple months ago so I haven't got to drive it more than up and down the driveway a couple times. It had bad gas and needed a carb kit. Then I added electronic ignition-- so its running pretty good now.

I haven't even looked at the transmission other than I ran through each gear to make sure it sounds ok. When I pulled the PTO engagement shaft out, grey lube came out and it had a black streak in it at times. So I think something has been leaking for a long time, maybe multiple places?

There is either a hex or square bit plug on the back of the cluch housing you can pull out to drain out whatever is left in there.
