there is one of these at a auction im looking at just wondering how they are made as far as durability and how do the gearboxes hold up?

I'm sure the JD would be as good or better than the competition.Definitly better than the TSC/farm store type.JD has a reputation to uphold.Other than that,I really dont know...

I agree about sure its better than Farm & Fleet or TSC but just to buy it because it says jd on it would be a bad thing a Woods or Rhino are the maybe the best but before I bought used I to would check that gear box out for the beating they take.

There are some folks that believe that just because it says "John Deere" it is the "BEST"(no one else even exists),that is not true.Granted JD made some excelent equipment, but they also made some JUNK.You would be surprised on how much JD 'farms out'.A mower may be one such item....

JD "farms out" some things in today's world but not much when a 127 cutter was built. IIRC 127 was built in JD's factory that WAS in Welland,Ont.Canada

It's old and you might want to check on availability of parts for it. Just because it's a Deere doesn't mean there won't be NLA parts.

My father still has the one my grandfather bought 45 years ago. I think I'm safe in saying they were as good as any built. But remember when looking at it its age and the (ab)use it could have seen in that time. The one Dad has had the optional slip clutch which is handy but it can't be seized to work right or you'll be replacing other parts. I needed some parts for Dad's a few years ago and parts availability was not an issue. Depending on how you'll be using it and how much you may be farther ahead to buy a new lighter duty mower than an older one that needs repairs and is old enough that replacement parts are more expensive than the machine is worth or not available.

Graymore(?) was also in the name and they were made as a drag type, had one, not sure if made as pull type or not. 3 joint shaft that would turn without knocking, not like one had later that only had a 2 joint shaft. And they lifted level also unlike the later newer unit.
