John Deere 2020 engine oil?

I just bought a 1968 JD 2020 and want to do an oil change and I need to know what weight engine oil to use. Thanks for your help!

Use 15w40 Rotella if it is a diesel. I use the same oil on the gassers, but other people may recommend a non-detergent 30W oil.

I like Rotella for most everything, gas or diesel, but Deere also sells a really good conventional oil, and another that is a synthetic blend, Plus 50, that I use in my two little diesels (855 and 4310). It can be used in an extended crankcase period and maintain warranty, not that that is a problem on your 1020. The choice really depends on your severity of service, how many hours you put on it annually, and how frequently you change oil, but most any major brand with the correct certifications will do you just fine.

Tractor engines in that era were made to use the available oils. Check the charts: Single viscosity 30 weight oil is recommended for any temperature from 32 to 100 degrees. A good detergent SAE 30 will work best in any engine from earlier than the 80's, and in most tractor engines since, particularly diesels. If oil consumption is a problem with an engine, you are almost sure to experience less consumption with straight 30. I never bother with multi-viscosity oils unless the anticipated temperature is going to be well below freezing (which is almost never in this part of Texas).

Milspec 2104-B used to be the standard, although I'm sure it is now outdated. Texaco Ursa and other similar oils are appropriate.

There is no need to use a non-detergent oil unless the engine has had years of use with non-detergent oil. This is unliklely in a tractor as recent as the 60's.
