John Deere 2950 opinions

I need a little bit bigger tractor than I currently have. I am looking at a John Deere 2950. I would want to put a loader on it, but the loader work would be minimal. The main use would be light tillage work and hay work (Mowing, square bale, round bale). What are you opinions of these tractors? Any weak points I should look for.

Thanks,
Tod in Ohio

We sold many new, and they were much better tractors that the 2940s they replaced. We had few problems with them, and I know a few local farmers that replaced their 4020s with the 2950s and were pretty happy, although they are a bit lighter and have less power.

My uncle had a 2940 mfwd and loader he bought new. He sold it at his auction it may of had 5000-6000 hrs. ? and it never gave any trouble.
I really liked it. I could back wagons up better with it then anything else for some reason ? Maybe cause it sat higher and didn't turn as short as the 2630 ? which I always seemed to oversteer.
My uncle pulled me (2630 and disk) out of the mud with that 2940. Then he drove that 2940 right through that mud hole and dropped the plow to break it up. I never saw anything go through mud like that ! and plowing to boot ! Scared me as I thought he'd burry it so deep it would never come out. Went right on through and I am still amazed all these years later.

I think some had troubles with oil pipes in the tranny on early models, 2840 for sure , but these should of been sorted out by the 50 series.

From my personal opinion about 29's ,,look for a 4240 or simular waterlou tractor, there are a few 29's around here, and no one is happy with them, they have a complex cluster of internal hydraulic pipes that can drive you crazy, poor brake system, weak 3pt. weak steering, weak PTO clutch system,I could go on and on with head aches no one needs, sure there are a few people who might like them and thats okay, but they are no comparsion to a waterlou style unit, I rate them a couple of marks above a 2010, and of course they came from the same stable..

We sold many, and have very few problems. Certain early models with independent PTOs had trouble with the steel transmission pump pipes rattling and breaking, but Deere had upgrade kits of fix. Other than that, these tractors held up very well here on hilly dairy farms, and many that we sold new are still in daily use. Comparing them to 2010s is just plain rediculous.

The 29 series are the best deere made comparing them to the 2010 is stupid no offence.
We own a 2940 has over 12,000 hours and going great its awsume tractor.

I work at a Deere dealer and when we see a tractor like a 2950 or other German built tractor we all hide. The running joke around the shop is that part of annual maintainence is to split it and do major transmission work or clutch work. They have a good engine but that is where the good points stop, clutch is weak for a loader, hydraulics are over complicated and usually fail, transmission is just backwards, and they are very difficult to work on.

Seems to be a big variation of opinions ?

When in doubt JUST GO BUY A 4020 !!!!! LOL

Seems you can't go wrong with them.

Have run and worked on Mannheim tractors for 25 years and yes they have some issues but I think they are a good tractor. The cab models electrical system would make you swear by times and the classic high pressure leak in the rockshaft valve is a fairly common but easily fixed problem. Have personally put thousands of hours on 2130,2140 and 3130 tractors and would do it all again. Bob

Known in England as the 3050, and down under as the 3150. As bout as good as a tractor got. Cab electrics our only hassle, (the big multi plug on the cab bulkhead and the fuse cards - both easy fixes) Internal hydraulic leaks? no, this is a 50 series machine not a 40 and most of the pipe work is external. I am a tractor service foreman at a JD dealers and we have very little problems with these tractors - and we have a lot of them, 75% of our tractors are Manhiem machines, and we are not busy!

All kinds of 3130's, 3140's, 2950's, 2955's and 3155's around here. Reliable and sought after at action sales instead of purchasing a 5000, 10,20 or 25 tractor.
In particular demand those with the SoundGard Body and 4WD.

Guessing you dont move round bales with them. I weld rockshaft housings on 40 and 50 series quite often from people moving round bales. NEVER welded on any others.

When purchasing used tractors as with anything else. Always go by the dealership and for free. Price the new version then you will have an accurate benchmark for the used market.
