I just picked up a free 318 lawn tractor, I need some help with the electrical problem the owner said something is draining the battery very quickly, I have yet to get it I am going to pick it up tomorrow and try to get it started and was wondering what is the black box for and does anyone have a wiring diagram for this lawn tractor also the motor smokes excessively but runs good are these engines worth rebuilding and were can I get a manual or does some have a spare laying around thanks

The black box is the time delay control module
It works along with the seat switch to delay the engine dieing if u momenttarly come off the seat
Its the brains of the saftey system
AS far as a wiring diagram take the tractor serial number to ur local dealer an he should be able to print u one
Take the serial number for there are several different ones
He should be able to help u with a manual as well or call 1 800 jdlawns for a manual
AS far as the engine its worth rebuilding although onan engine parts can be hard to find at times
Good Luck An you got a great tractor The last of the good solid tractors Worth $1500 EASY in good shape
Have fun Gary

That's a very good tractor. The engine is rebuildable, or there are repower kits out there.

Check WeekendFreedomMachines.com. A new wiring harness isn't very expensive. That might be a better solution than several hours of poke and wiggle. A couple guesses first, though ... does the battery go dead while running or while shut off? If that happens while running, the best bet is the electric PTO clutch. It's fairly expensive new but good used ones come up on the auction site. If it goes dead while shut off, look for wires chafing against metal.

I wish I could run into a free tractor. I tend to have to pay for them.

Send me an email and I will try to get you a copy of the wiring diagram. It will take a day or two because my repair manual is at home and the scanner is at work.

The problem is, the wiring made a few changes over the years such as the move from a B43 to a P218 engine. I'm not sure if the manual even has the diagram, but I will find out.

this is going to be new to me I have a 2040 that I restored and have worked on craftsman lawnmower but this does not seem to be a walmart tractor, but I am going to have to learn about it so get ready for the questions, what does it have an electric pto for? I sure hope I can get it to fire off once I get it home I remember seeing it run and boy did it used to smoke but it is exciting taking something on like this and finally seeing it run whether it smokes or not but my plan is to turn it into a nice mower without putting as much in it as a new one thanks

does any one sell a rebuild kit for the onan or do I have to use a different brand of motor I was hoping to tear down the onan and rebuild if possible

FREE?? What is that a French word? They don't speak it where I'm at.Kidding,of course,YES,an onan is one of the hard workingest, longest lasting engines I know of.But they are pricey when it comes to replacement parts. We have a Cummings/Onan dealer not too far away.I'd look online before making up my mind.Once you get it home you can figure out what's what.Might be something easy to repair.Good luck, with it and keep us posted,Dude11

I just got home with the 318 I found out the battery is fully charged but the solenoid is not pulling in but I am getting 12 volts to the wire to the solenoid so now I need to know how to get the starter off so I can access the solenoid, the tractor has 360 hrs on it and cant wait to hear it run thanks for the help, I am at home so can not access my email I may go to work tomorrow and check it thanks for the replies

still having trouble getting starter to turn over when I check for voltage at the starter wire from the switch I get 10-11 volts and when I check the battery voltage I get 12 volts, but the solenoid will not engage I took off the starter and put jumper cables on the starter post and a small jumper to the solenoid and the starter worked and the bendix popped out as it should I guess I will check the switch next and jumper straight to the starter from the switch and see what happens. Also when the key is on I here the time delay clicking is it supposed to be clcking thanks

You need the starter improvement kit. I sent you an email about it.

Congratulations on the free 318. You have a lot less in it than the one I just bought Saturday. Here is a picture of it.

I got the 318 to fire up last night but I had to put a wire from the battery to the new solenoid to get it to turn over but man did it run good when it cranked it just had a little bit of smoke not enough for me to worry about, I am going to get a new key switch and the starter improvement kit and see if that fixes my problem like steve said and I think I will be ready to go thanks for all the help

Steve,

Could you please email me the diagram regarding the starter? My husband is trying to remove the starter from the 318, but says it looks like everything is built in around it and he doesn't know where to start. Thanks!
