John Deere 40 Model Identification

My grandfather has an old rusty tractor that I need help identifying. On the transmission there is a metal tag that says that it is a model 40, but under the ignition switch there is a metal plate that states that it is a MT. Can anyone help me determine whether or not this really is a 40. Thanks

In view of the fact that the parts will pretty much mix and match, it appears that what you have is know as a b*st**d. I once did that with two crawlers, a 40C and a high numbered 420C. Most things bolt right in.

Ha thanks for your reply. Does anyone know if the MT's had a three point hitch because what I have does? If they didn't then that will solve my question about what mine is. I'm hoping that it is a 40 and they just swapped some sheet metal if possible. Let me know what ya'll think. Everything is rusted on it so I can see any of the old decals.

model 40 comes with a 3 point hitch. MT from the factory does not have 3 point hitch. I think they could be added though. Many parts are the same though. Should be a serial tag that would identify it somewhere. Look on left side down near the clutch for it.

On the 40, the steering wheel shaft just comes out from the pedestal straight to the wheel. On the M, there is an adjustment to let it go back and forth.

On the 40, the temp gage screws into the back of the block just below the head.

On the 40, the serial tag is on the left side of the torque tube, I THINK it's on the dash for the M.

The levers for the hydraulic are very different on the two tractors.

If you need a stepladder to get on the tractor, it's an M.

Thanks for all the help guys. It looks like I may have a tractor that is pieced together. Does anyone know if one tractor is better or more preferred than the other between the 40 and the M. Thanks

Loved your comment about using a stepladder to get on an M. I restored a M and a 40T You have to be a contortionist to get on an M, my 40T is SO much easier to get on!

sounds like you have a 40 with a MT steering support(dash). i think the 40 had straight rear axles housing coming out or rear side of trans. wearas the MT had a dropdown type differental housing. hope this helps, d. colemaN

Thanks. Why on the rear wheels on this tractor does it have a shaft coming through the center of the wheel that sticks out a little over a foot. what was the purpose of this.

planter drive. if you will go back to earlyer post you will come to a post labeled " Alabamafrog paper pulley, in it he posts a picture of his MT rear. this might help with your ID delima. good luck, d. coleman

Brady,
The air slots on the MT grill go from side to side, the air slots on the 40 grill go top to bottom. The MT also used the striaght axle style. Are you talking about the axle coming out of the wheel? If you are that is so the wheels could be adjusted in and out for different types of implements. The MT used a two piece gear that was mounted on the axles to run the planters. I think the 40 fenders go all the way to the foot rest. The MT fenders do not. If you could post some pictures someone would be able to tell you.

Hey do you know where a good site is to find out about the different implements that were used for the MT. Were they specifically made for the MT or was it like now where any 3 point hitch implement will hook up to any 3 point hitch tractor. Thanks

You can start here. jdparts.deere.com When the page opens up you will see on the left side it will say Parts Catolog, click on it. On the next page where it says model type in MT and click on search. There will be some of the implements for the MT. Last time I used it you could download them to your computer. You can email me at [email protected] and I can try and send you a list also.
