John Deere 40 timing

Hi, Can anyone tell me how to time a John Deere model 40 without the timing tool AM450t. We have the tractor rebuilt, and that's what we're waiting on, but the manual calls for that specific tool, and I don't know how to do it without the tool. Any suggestions are appreciated.

You're talking about installing the oil pump? If so, the tool isn't necessary.

This is how I did it on an M which is similar to the 40:

Set #1 cylinder at TDC, compression.

Install oil pump.

Look into the hole where distributor mounts. You should see the slot at the top of the oil pump that drives the distributor. The slot should be more-or-less parallel to the crankshaft, and the slot should be offset away from the engine block. (Narrow side away from tractor.)

If it isn't parallel, pull the oil pump out, and turn the shaft so that different gears mesh when you raise it into place. (A good starting point for setting the oil pump alignment is to rotate the pump shaft so that the slot is rotated ~30 degrees counterclockwise from the correct timing position...i.e. parallel to the crankshaft with slot offset away from engine block....then raise the oil pump into position.)

This should get you close...might have to rotate the pump shaft a little one way or the other.

Have fun!

Case Rider, thank you very much for the advice. I"ll try that this weekend. Again, I appreciate your help. Wish me luck. :-)
