John Deere 4840

Found a JD 4840 with transmisson problems. It is a quad shift and I believe they said the problem is between 4th and 5th gears. Any of you ever had to deal with this?

I don't think they made a 4840 in anything but a power shift, and if the power shift planetary brake assembly is bad they are "very" pricy ,,in the $10,000 range,,you don't want to go there...

Have only seen pictures of the tractor and we were planning on looking at it this week sometime. They are wanting $5000 for it, brand new dual rear radials. Was under the impression that they had bought it thinking it was going to be a quick cheap fix and found out it was not. I stand corrected it is a pwr shift

I'm sure there is a "good" reason for the cheap price,,I have seen some Power Shift tractors advertized cheap with transmission issues,,some one has seen the possible cost of repair and don't want to go on with it....

Also didn't think they made anything but Power Shift; had one that was my 'big' tractor for about 10 years. If I had it to do over again, I'd probably buy a 4640 instead.

The 4840s were good workhorse but just dont have that good of resale and are basically a 4640.Powershifts are fine until you have a problem then hold on to your wallet as I have seen some with 10K+ repair bills from JD service centers.5000 would be near salvage value especially with good rubber.I pesonally dont buy problems as they are usually free and multiply.

Hey Aowner,

If you're correct about the rear rubber being new, you're buying the rubber and getting the tractor for free. Odds are this thing has 20.8 38's on it, but it may have 18.4 42's. I just put new rubber on the back of my 4430, 18.4 38 Goodyear Dyna torque radials, and paid $2600 mounted and the old radials put on the duals. 20.8 38 and 18.4 42 radials cost more than 2600 a pair - you'll have at least 5200 worth.

If you got another pig that needs shoes, you might be better off stripping the rubber off this one, putting it on the other one, and parting out the rest.
