John Deere 5020

Thinking about buying an old John Deere 5020. A guy can't have too many toys. We had a 4020 but I always wanted a 5020.

I hear they were/are too heavy for their horsepower but know lots of guys soup them up to about 160 hp. Is that good or bad? Cause rear-end problems with too much power?

Appreciate opinions on this tractor.

Just be a "play-toy" for me but when one of our old maple trees fall down I'll have the tree puller.

I dont think you will have tranny problems, that was one of the tractors the you could put a detroit conversion kit into. Dont know what they sell for anymore..I have one that I want $4000. for..junk price is high right now, not saying it will junk out for that, but for parts and such you could sell whats left for junk.

I had 2 neighbors back in the 70's that turboed them and turned pump to 160-175 hp and one pulled 8 bottom plow and the other a 7 bottom plow . They worked that way for years and years and never had any problems of any kind. The one was sold on retiement auction a few years ago and the other is still used as a loader tractor now. They love it when picking up 3 large squares of hay because of it's weight on the backend. They sound neat with the turbo and straight pipes.

The last version of the 5020, the 6030, was cranked up to atleast 200 pto HP and had no driveline problems. Hot, noisy, crude, but a brute for raw HP and had enough weight to put er to the ground.

Kinze had the 5050 he put an 855 cummins in a 5020 if I rember correctly,so if it will take that HP and torque I don't think you could get enough power from the factory motor to hurt it

may want to look for a 6030. Similar price to a 5020 and the factory did the entire soupup job for you.
