The big ole 5020 is somewhat of an albatross. It is heavy and capable, but its frame is large for its power and its configuration makes it unsuited for utility use. Few serious farmers want to depend on a tractor this old for heavy field work and it is far too large for most hobbyist/part timers, so the potential buyers are thus rather limited. Others that fall into this category are the 5010, 4520, 4620, and 6030.

I would think a nice one would have to hurry to reach $5000, but I don't have any recent frame of reference. I'll be interested in the opinions of others.

They are mostly a standby tractor for farmers. They sit in the corner of the shed until the main tractor is stuck or down for service.
During seasonal peak demand to tow a grain cart, run a liquid manure pump etc.

I sold mine for 5200 with a Deere F145 5 bottom plow. The buyer ripped the cab off it, gave it fresh paint and now uses it in a lakeshore dry dock moving big yacts around. I grew up on a dairy with 2 3020's as the big tractor so when I bought the 5020 it was a big deal. It had duals that were all loaded, it weighed 19,980 lbs. The only place the 5020 was really great was on the chopper. We run a Deere 3800 chopper with 2 row head and there wasn't corn tall enough to bog the engine down. On the other hand, in tillage the thing was a joke without a turbo. In our clay I had a difficult time pulling the 5 bottom, it just didn't have the horses. I pulled a big 18 foot disc and it was ok on it but all in all just didn't have the power to handle tillage tools. I had it dynoed and it hit 153 horse when I bought it, then after the pump went out and was rebuilt it hit 147. The guy that did the dyno was also the one who had rebuilt the tranny and the inj pump, and he was unwilling to turn up the pump a hair, so I was stuck with what I had. I would have been better off with a 4620 or a 6030. The 4620 would have been my first choice as power shift was an option.

Dad wanted a 5020 until he found out that they only have a 1000 rpm PTO and didn’t have a 540. He then decided it would be useless.

Either way, cheap power on demand. Certainly nothing you want to depend on solely with a larger operation.

The turbo is an add on.

Most of the value will depend on the condition of the engine and tires. I paid a bit more for mine than others have said, but it had nearly new 30.5 x 32 tires on it. Mostly bought it as a toy to take to the local tractor pulls although I use it some around the farm too. It has enough power to destroy any implement I own if I'm not careful.

They get a bad rap for being clumsy poor handling tractors. I dont think it handles any worse than a 1070 Case or 856 Farmall, but with the long axles and big tires on mine I certainly dont use it to back wagons in the shed.
