john deere 535 Baler with problems

I have a john deere 535 Baler with a couple problem.
1) trouble with bale size. it will make diffrent size bales. some will be lop sided. it seems to be worse when the windrow is small. it just starts the twin rapping process.
2) When i first start baling the tie arms will not travel all the way across the bale i have to pull the the arm the rest of the way then it will travel back to the finish position. sometimes after about 5 bale it will start working correctly.

i hope some one can help. don't know where to start?

Sounds like your limit switches are messed up on the bale size and lopsided issue. Check them first. Clean around them real good, check the wiring, and adjust them if necessary. It might be time for new switches or harness. I replaced all the switches and wiring harness on my 530.

Can't help you on the tying arm. If it runs off a pump like the 530, I would start with the filter, then change the oil.

not sure witch are the limit switches but i will check my manual tonight when i get home. the tie does run off a pump maybe the same as yours. i think i will replace the filter and fluid. not sure if its the right pump. had some people tell me it needs to be from John Deere. it was working fine.

You do know that you have to drive from right to left across the windrow when you are baling to keep the ends of the bale full, you can"t just drive down the center of the windrow. Can"t help with the tying problem, don"t know how it is set up.

This doesn't help the issue and I apologize for that, but my last
baler was a 530 and it had the auto tie, dashboard mounted
balance indicators, lights and all.

I sold off my stuff a few years ago and decided this year to do
my own hay again. I located a JD 375 which is a little brother to
these balers mentioned. It rolls a 4' dia x 5' length 1000#
roll....nice for my little 65 hp tractor.

This little sucker is all manual and has manual indicators on the
front of the baler that I can see from the outside rear view mirror
on the tractor. I am just now starting to use it, but already I love
it. All those frustrations are a thing of the past.

I especially like the tie system. It has the same hyd cylinder
running the tie arms as the big brothers, but it is directly
operated by the tractor remote control, not a pesky automatic
hyd pumping system that decides for you when it is time to tie
and how much tieing is going to take place. Also has a manual
gauge to show you where you are and a wheel (that I had to add
to my 530 to show you when the pickup has started.

If you were to consider the manual tie, the cylinder that runs the
arms is connected directly to a second remote outlet. Nothing
else in the circuit. Even with the tractor idling, the sweep time
from lock (finish position of last bale) all the way over to start on
the new bale, after you stop in the middle to pick up the twine,
is immediate. You can go back and forth as much as you choose
and stay in one position as along as you wish. To tie the bale,
just bump the remote lever, wait, bump, wait, etc. till you get
finished. Bale tie was my biggest gripe with my 530.

On the twine tying arms not cycling correctly. Have you liberally greased the grease zerts on twine mechanism that are hard to see?? Yes it would be a good idea to change the hyd filter. Be sure and put as much oil in the NEW filter as allowable before installation as the system is a PIA to bleed the air out of it. No micro-switches control twine arms as it all mechanical/hyd. Micro-switches just activate lights on the monitor to let operator know what's happening. Also check to see if a compressor rod is bent up obstructing twine arms travel. GM PS pump will work if the pump isn't a JD part.BTDT

On lopsided bales: either operator ERROR or maladjusted sensor switches/malfunctioning gauges. Small windrows produce whiskey barrel/snow cone shaped bales if not baled by an experienced operator.

i am aware that i need to cross the windrow back and forth to fill the ends of the bale. i have been round baling for about 20 years. i have been using this 535 for 3 years before that i had a NH 855 chain baler that i bought new. The problem with the tying and good bales just started late last season. i have greased everything and am replacing the filter and fluid to night. going to bale this weekend if we dont get rained out.

Another thing to check is a couple of springs on the right side behind some of the auto tie stuff. If they break or come loose or are replaced with non JD springs weird things can happen.

I work for a JD dealer our baler guy says not to crack the tie system due to no good way to bleed off other wise not sure how to help. GOOD LUCK

You baler man is correct. JD showed in operators or service manual to wrap a rag around a rubber hose that had been inserted in the reservoir neck of the pump and "blow in hose" while cycling twine arms. Although bleeding them is ornery it can be done. BTDT

ok had a good weekend of baling. after draining fluid and replacing the filter the tie work perfectly. i still had diffrent size bales but they all were well formed. when looking at the bale size indicator it showed the same size bale.
i also used a new 12 wheel rake for the first time and it worked great. looking forward to baling this weekend.
thanks for all the replies if i figure anything out on the bale size i will report back.

My 435 has a rope manual pull to start the bale tie if I need to make a small bale at the end of the field. If I'm not careful I can get the rope tied too tight to the tractor and when I turn it will pull the manual tie arm and make a random bale.

Also check the wiring on the bale length adjuster, I had a rat chew the plastic off those 3 wires one winter. There is also a grease fitting right behind my pump that is very hard to see let alone grease.
